Why? The human spirit, aka the soul, in Eastern Religions, is allowed a duality, Ardbert being the opposite sex of you is more fitting with Dualism, which is the theme of Shadowbringer. I find it stranger if you played a generic male Hyur Midlander. Playing any non Hyur female fits so much better with the narrative.

I play a female WoL and the only time it’s weird to me is when Ardbert starts talking through me. Like during the scene with Seto. None of the other seven fragments of myself can do that, so why does he? (Plot, I know). But then again, I’m a guy in real life.

But I have to agree with an earlier poster here. Making Azem explicitly gay if you play a male WoL/Azem wouldn’t sit well with a lot of folks. Then again, I guess they could say, just because Azem was originally in a same-sex relationship doesn’t mean that’s who YOU are. As we still seem to be our own person with our own identity.

But that’s why leaving it open to interpretation is cool.

I didn't think it seemed strange - he's not "us" in other physical aspects, so why should gender be any more tied to the soul than the rest of it?

It seems stranger to me that Azem does vary gender according to the individual WoL.

As for Emet-Selch, I'm not sure about lovers but "close friends" definitely seems implied - and personally I feel like that revelation was dropped on us a bit too late. (Plus his whole arc was somewhat tainted for me due to how awfully he treated Varis in his introduction - I do struggle with the shift from his petty cruelty there to less vindictive intentions.) Ultimately I was fine with him as a noble adversary but he doesn't quite click as a friend. Perhaps simply because we never spent any time with him after learning it was the case?
