PSA: Beware of the Necro Threads

So the mod response is to delete the other thread complaining about his necro posts, but continue to allow him to do it. Clearly the mods are ok with it. Which mean they’re doing a crappy job and I’m just done with the forums since you can’t have any decent threads without trolls being given free reign to drown out conversations. I guess he wins.

He's now outright making political threads. If he can get away with that, he can get away with anything.

Its really strange how he and his other accounts and other older forum posters that also had their troll phase can just go on with it and yet we had the Ottergate where many people got punished..of course the otter pictures were off topic but seemingly that is still worse than actively trolling?

I know that him having an active forum account means that he is paying a sub..but honestly I really wished they would ban his whole player account too which would at least stop it a bit there until he buys himself a new one..but I guess that is money lost so not done..

The thing with a public forum is you're not directly communicating with people, you're posting ideas or replies for all to view.
People can look upon this information and provide their own input. This doesn't need to have a time limit to it.
Limiting discourse via a time limit doesn't seem like a great idea in any case, especially when people just deem some arbitrary limit to it.

Honestly I dont know any forum that I visit (mostly fan forums) that allow to necro a thread. Most of the time the mods will step up and lock it after its necroed and say that they should create a new one. Depending on the age it is full of outdated information and honestly since we have no limited of threads themselves, there should be no problem to simply create the same topic again. Seemingly that is the prefered method for those other forums too. (And their mods who are often doing that for free in their spare time do not only find time to post their own thoughts but also strictly moderate the forums too..so trolls like him dont even stand a chance at all)

Yeah, I'm done for now. You cant even see the new threads popping up because he has 3 accounts actively necroing posts and people don't pay attention and reply.

I've been here 10 years, this is the worst the forums have ever been. What a disappointment.

At this point, the only solution might be spamming new complaint threads until the mods are tired of deleting them all...

Unfortunately, it isn't my call. You're right. We do know about him at this point, but that's just a rule the mods want to enforce over, ya know, banning the guy bumping several year old threads.

It's still naming and shaming because technically it's up to the moderators to decide if the rules are being broken, not the other posters.

Just report the pointless necro. As long as you're making the report in good faith, it won't cause you problems.

edit: want to add that complaining about him in more posts just feeds his need for attention. Silently reporting him doesn't. If people stop openly reacting, his little game becomes less fulfilling for him.

Sadly SE really needs to have some mods actually read this forum and then they would notice that a certain person is being disruptive and then take the necessary action.

If the thread is only locked (rather than deleted) after it hasn't had new posts for a certain amount of time, then it can still be linked to in the first post of a new thread by somebody who wishes to revisit the discussion.

This provides the same benefit as necroing but removes a lot of the confusion that results when people don't notice the dates on early posts and start responding to statements that were made before significant changes to the game and/or buy people who may not have looked at the forums in a long time. This is what I've seen done on other forums where threads have been auto-locked after a certain amount of time inactive. It doesn't prevent discussion but it does cut down on confusion that tends to come with necroing.

I really do fail to see the upside to this idea.
You can respond to someone without needing that person to ever see your response. It still provides benefit to a third party reader. It'll stop segregation of information, and keep discussion linear and chronological.
Just because someone right now is going around bumping old topics, or in the terms here, necroing, a lot doesn't mean it's a bad thing in general.

A lot of old message boards had such asinine rules. "Hey going to lock this topic because you didn't use the search function." and you go to search for what you were asking and you have some locked year old topic with half answered posts. Or the worst contender is when someone has a bespoke problem that you happened to have but the only response was from the original topic creator replying to himself "figured it out" without any actual explanation.

The idea of a public forum is not discussion between two people. It is a public platform (as public as this place can be, needing a game account), to allow others to comment, or simply just silently view. The age of a post should not have any bearing on if it should be replyable or not.
