Id love a different icon for mentors, though I feel like they should fit the Sprout and the Flower theme. Mentors should be something that helps a plant grow... like a watering can, or if we are being a bit fun, fertilizer. Poop emojis for mentors.

Tear drop would work just as well.

I see it as a win if anything regarding mentors are flamed less.
The system by it self isn't the problem, it's the reason why people join the system that is. They want to feel superior, and a crown is the very definition of superiority. That's why I think it's stupid to have a crown for mentors that has nothing to do with superiority.
This is what I first wanted as well, but I want to remove the "I'm better then you" principle completely which means the icon should not be something bigger something better. It should just be a straightforward icon.

I wrote the exact same idea in french 2 years ago so I'm all for it too.
The golden crown is definitely toxic.
Except I'm still in favor of an icon related to the novice's one: wheelbarrow, watering can, grown tree... something fun and.. green! xD
I'm afraid the question mark is not a good idea: mentors are not part of the tutorial nor SE team... they are just players willing to help. Seeing that icon would be too confusing for novices.

I actually like the idea of a watering can which Thi also mentioned. But still, the most important part is that the symbol can't be so nice that you want to have it just because it looks neat, because that would defeat the purpose of changing it.
I was thinking the Question Mark because it's well known to learning the game, maybe a different color would be better? Just to separate it from SE but still be similar enough to be recognized as a help icon?

And like I've said many times in this forum, where are these so called mentors that join because the want to feel superior and then do a poor job of mentoring? This is an urban legend with no evidence whatsoever. Problematic mentors in content look like such a tiny minority in this game, but people get so hyped up over the few bad encounters they have.
Implementing all of these changes wouldn't make much of a difference, people would still come here to complain about the <1% of mentors that grind their gears, just as they do the current 1%.

No evidence? I've both seen and heard enough in-game, from friends and on forums to actually see that there is a problem. And we're not talking about some 1%.
And if it really were an urban legend, why did SE feel the need to add the requirement update?
But all that aside, I want to change the icon to take away those people who becomes mentors just for the crown, no matter how small the percentage may be.
And even if this won't change who become mentors and who doesn't, it might still get mentors flamed a little less. A lot of people seemed to get annoyed by the crown itself.
I don't mind the icon change. I never cared much for the crown as a symbol. Like you say, if anything it'll highlight that the icon isn't the issue and maybe slow the amount of mentor bashing going on.No evidence? And yes it is most likely around the 1% range (and that's including helpful mentors that can lose patience with sprouts at times and those that drop ex trials but are otherwise fine). On Aether it's closer to 1.2-1.3%. The reason people talk about it a lot is most likely survivor bias. People will ignore the almost 80% of mentors who are silent because it's really easy to miss them, they skim over the full 20% of mentors who do help in content. Because they either don't take note of the fact they're mentors or just because it's normal for a mentor to help. But if one in a hundred mentors says something bad, that really sticks in people's minds.
FYI: The numbers come from keeping an updated spreadsheet of mentor encounters for Aether. I wouldn't expect that much difference with other data centers, though it would be nice if someone on the EU DCs could share the same kind of info to see if the language barrier makes a difference or not.

About 50% of the mentors I encounter make me want to have an extra pair of hands so I can do a quadruple facepalm. And like I've said many times in this forum, where are these so called mentors that join because the want to feel superior and then do a poor job of mentoring? They don't care to help newbies and overall act like they know everything without actually sharing the knowledge.
And then those same mentors fail at mechanics. Seen some sprouts that knew more of the fight than mentors.
Mentor icon for me is like a huge red flag. I'd love to see it changed so we'd have less people wanting to show off and more people that want to help.

1% is the number of good and useful mentors not the number of bad ones. And like I've said many times in this forum, where are these so called mentors that join because the want to feel superior and then do a poor job of mentoring?
