This. Though... it's complicated.

He took part in raising Ascilia (who later renamed herself Minfillia) from the time her father died, when she was still a young teen, though not so integrally as Ascilia's songstress/dancer unofficial adoptive mother (her name escapes me, atm, but she appears in ARR anyways).

Their ages don't seem that far apart, though, so it certainly borders between an older relative of the same generation or a helpful neighbor and a father-daughter -- or even just a(n emotionally charged) mentor/mentee -- relationship.
