The Mentor system requires some fixing, but whenever I see complaints from it I think people have no idea how to fix it. What requirements do you make to be a mentor? Triple Legend? parsers 99? to people who have more knowledge of the game with exams? Top 100 The Feast?

None of these requirements certify that you are a better or a worse player or that you know more or less about the game, the current system can be fixed a little but there will always be mentors who have no idea about the game, no matter the system.
Tbh I'm surprised that getting a good feast rank in pvp is not a requirement for pvp mentor not going to lie

First I'd change pretentious icon from a crown to something less obnoxious maybe that'll drive out some of the shitty mentors. But lets start with that

Game exam wouldn't be a bad idea, ultimate clears are overkill.

In fact, to be a PVP mentor you don't need to have played The Feast, Frontline or Rival Wings, NOTHING. The problem is that of course playing the feast does not imply that you know how to play Frontline because the handling is very different and other types of things are rewarded.

The crown is not the problem, putting any other type of things that is necessary to identify them would attract the attention of people who have no idea.

I don't get this assumption that mentors are supposed to be the best of the best, infallible and never be the ones to ask questions. That's just as hyperbolic as a blanket claim that mentors are all worthless and toxic. In any game I've ever played, the mentor system is designed around mentors just being players with a basic working knowledge of the game and beng willing to help out other players. As a result you're going to get mentors running the gamut from people with extensive knowledge of the game to those with a more social "welcome to the game! lets have fun and learn stuff together!" type. All are equally valid and welcome.

I aslo don't get the assumption that novice network is supposed to only be used only for answering direct questions from novices. It's definitely a major purpose of it, sure, but there's also nothing wrong on its own with people chatting in the novice network. If anything, this makes the game seem more active for a truly new player who is probably spending a lot of time in older zones with less people physically around them. Mentors are also just players, so they're going to interact just as any player would both positively and negatively (e.g. spoiling the story or trolling.) There are tools for dealing with the negative player interactions within the novice network just like for those outside of it. E.g. you can mute the novice network temporarily, leave the network entirely, report misuse of the novice network kick if you feel it was unwarranted, etc.

Side note: The OP made it seem like sprouts automatically get put into the novice network without a choice. Did that change recently? It used to be that you had to be invited by a mentor and accept the invitation to gain access, presumably to avoid it from turning into a RMT chat network.

The devs have mentioned they want to add PvP specific requirements for PvP mentor but it is not a priority at the moment.

There really should just be one general mentor status that requires fulfilling the current requirements for both combat and trade mentor.

The latter is such a joke to obtain that simply leveling a DoH and DoL class to 80 can potentially be enough to get you there if you're doing so via collectables. On the flip side, the commendation requirement ensures that a combat mentor has at least actually played the game with other people a great deal as you're not going to be getting those if you're just grinding jobs to 80 with FATEs/trusts.

They also should make Novice Network opt-in only as the bulk of the "mentors" in there just wanted a fancy burger king crown and have no actual interest in helping people.

I didn't know about this, I'm glad you're considering this.

Well it assume you know the basics of pvp and how to be decent.

The crown is pretentious as hell and can mean almost anything to new players. Making it a watering can makes it more identifiable as a mentor symbol.

The requirements for the mentor system is utter garbage. Commendations? What a joke! Actual gameplay elements need to be implemented and at the very least time played the game. Basic knowledge on rotation, game mechanics and gameplay should be demonstrated. SSS for example.

Oh and the NN changed from another link shell chat room to a more one on one environment. If a sprout needs help there should be a list of mentors they’re able to /tell at their leisure providing they’re online
