Mentors and Novice Network

Today I was in the novice network and one of the lovely regular posters there decided to tell us all about the end of Shadowbringers. Which kinda puts a dampener on the whole rest of the game for me.

The mentors in the network said not to spoil but the guy was not kicked. When a novice complained they were kicked for spoiling the mood.

I think this is a really broken system. Mentors are people who played the game a lot. They are not qualified chat moderators, they are not inherently good people, they are not even inherently good at the game.

Most of the NN chat on my realm is mentors talking about things like Nier raids etc. I like the idea of a network for new players but it’s like a second free company for these guys.

Anyway this is just a rant really. You put level one sprouts in a chat with no obvious way of getting out of it, while you have level 80s in that chat telling them how the game ends and kicking them if they don’t respect their right to do so. Maybe this should be revisited, it’s not a positive feature imo.

Yeah the NN on Sarg often turns more toxic than a twitter rant & when you try to correct the situation, suddenly you're the bad guy- I'm a mentor & I was lowkey excited to get to help new players but to my dismay, NN is just used for a separate world chat to talk about everything not related to FFXIV unless it's to complain or spoil plot points.

The only good experience I've had with NN was I was on the Siren server at 2 a.m. talking a sprout & his friend through a dungeon while I sat in Gridania- I was the only mentor willing to talk in the NN at that hour I guess- then we all somehow got on the topic of how to properly raise kittens when noone needed help.

I agree on the "not even being good people" part. I try really hard to be a good help and guide for newbies because my experience with the Novice Network was getting told that I was "naive" and obviously young for objecting to some comments about relationships that bordered on mysoginistic by saying you shouldn't date someone if you don't like them. My experience with fellowships aimed at doing the same things as NN have been a lot more productive and less toxic.

So in lieu of any changes definitely check out some newbie fellowships!

Do people actually use that crap? I'm so glad I've never touched that crap when I joined. It sounds like a network of grey parsers who provide bad advise for new players.

Tell that to all those people with 90+ parsers who made me wipe for a week enterss E8S because it was very difficult for them not to screw it up in the LR or those who did not know that you have 4 seconds of invulnerability when you revive. (I still have PTSD from the Summoner from 2 weeks ago with 85 parsers dying 4 times in a row on Ramuh)

Or also a friend who runs a discord channel with The Balance guides in Spanish who had to kick a Scholar with 99+ parsers from her static because he was useless to cure :^)

OMG I witnessed in NN a returner complaining about positionals, when a mentor proceed to tell them that positionals aren't even necessary. They went into how you do what you want to have fun, don't don't even worry about positionals, because the damage is basically negligible. I mentioned how that would not work out too well for them in an EX or any end game content, and got called an elitist for it lol. Its common sense I would think. You know, to try to do as much damage as you can, so the rest of your party isn't carrying you, if you manage to clear. I worry for the future of this game with this kind of mentality being pushed.

i'll have you know the diabolos mentor network cleared the copied factory on day 2 and cleared the puppet's bunker on day 1 so watch what you say about mentors. don't underestimate us
