Gath used HNM as an example, it's people who are too worried about how Gath types they don't actually look at the topic. Like yourself.

Let me turn Gath's thesis a bit. What makes PvE so competitive? Competition around claiming mobs for the loot they drop isn't what I personally would call competition. Boasting a larger number of successful instance runs isn't what I'd call competition either. What I think Gath has failed to produce is a more, how should I put it, global perspective on the idea of how an LS can develop their own "role and uniqueness", that would ultimately glue them more together in a patriotic sense. What I read most out of Gath's comments and suggestions, they are aimed at what LS' should be able to flaunt on the AH. That's more to do with eco and farming than epeen, and who can hug the best and most monster-drops on a server. Is this really competition, or is it just grind?

I think what I miss from Gath's suggestion/speech is some what Gath wants in the game to make Linkshells unique, and what should define them as a sub-community on their server. I think Gath's suggestion needs more RvR-spice in order to mature what Gath is scratching at. What if Gath would suggest Linkshells have to commit to a certain faction/company, and that their grind actually have a certain world impact? Coming from a background that praises humility, I'd personally find little love for words-only brag. "Our LS did this, that, sold this, that" is incredibly tiresome, and isn't especially admirable. Just tireable. But if the LS would rank high and bring their faction/company to greater prestige and influence over the rest of the server, then I could actually see for myself they're doing well. In every aspect, I think PvE is impossible to make "competitive" because how can killing computer characters ever be competitive against anyone but yourself and your group? PvP, Eco, RvR, those things are competitive by nature. There may be word to mouth that this certain LS have alot of good and skilled players in it, but that can just as much be simple hearsay, giving them status only by psychological means and propaganda. How could I ever trust an LS to be extraordinary by just hearing someone saying they're extraordinary because of instance runs, mob-kills, or w/e?

If there is an item I want, that other people can get through competition, I would rather take a while to get the item.

This way I will have the drive to keep fighting the boss, such as Ifrit, till I get it. Once you get the item, do you feel like fighting it? No, you don't, which why I prefer to be the last one to get the item. When the first person get's their item, and never does it again, what do they look lie? A jerk.
