The one where we collected messages in bottle on the beach was actually really touching to me. Got a major case of the feels from it.

It's not about what we do for the game quest, it's about what the festival is said to be according to the in-game dialogue. And yes it's commemorating the Calamity (which at a meta level is linked to the game's anniversary). It's kinda hard to say. One year we reenacted the siege in Ul'dah from the last hours before the fall of Dalamud (even including the Great Goobue Wall at the gates), but another year we collected trash on the beach and found messages in bottles. In previous years we fought programming bugs and ran old-school mini-dungeons and other silliness. The only real unifying factor in Rising events is that the Wandering Minstrel is involved somehow.
Cleaning up the beach wasn't directly about the Rising; it was packing up from the Moonfire Faire and just incidentally led us to seek out the Minstrel at the Rising festival to help us decipher the message.

Isn't the Moonfire Faire based on the Japanese summer fireworks festivals?Actually looking at the Adventurer's Appreciation Campaign, I think that can be comparable to the Mogtome event (since it just grants players bonuses for this and that). So in a way, that makes FFXI and XIV equal when it comes to events.
FFXI's non-real life based events
Blazing Buffalo's
Summerfest
Feast of Swords
Adventurer's Appreciation
FFXIV's non-real life based events:
The Rising
Moonfire Faire
Make it Rain
Mogtome Event
And The Rising is based on the anniversary of the successful relaunch of the 2.0 game, so while not a real-world holiday, is is commemorating a real world event.

Yea the Rising is about the celebration to ending of the calamity and the game being reborn from the mess 1.0 was. If you were around for the second one, they really out did themselves with like the 18th or 19th floor tour. They gave an apology for the original FFXIV and how the dev team forgot about listening to the players and such. You got a message from different folks on the dev team and such. It was really cool. Because it if you were there from the beginning and carried your character over you got a different message, and if you were there from the start you also got a different message and each year it depending on how long you been with game. It's kinda hard to say. I like all the season events they are general fun and silly. Kind of sad to see All Saints Wake being canned this year though.

Here is what is said in game about the Rising.

As a player you are celebrating the anniversary of ARR
Your character is remembering the Calamity and hoping for a brighter future.
This could be compared to days for remembering soldiers, or specific wars, or specific situations or disasters that were overcome.

Just introduce glamour prisms for it. I mean, instead of glamour prisms that make you sprout glowy wings or have an emblem appear above your head, make a glamour prism that turns you into an NPC for 10 minutes. Then make those prisms purchasable as event rewards, which—as a bonus—allow all sorts of fun shenanigans outside of the event.
You could have meme runs where an entire raid is glamour-prismed into Y'shtola! And think of the potential for wedding photo shenanigans! ("Look at how many of the Scions attended my Ceremony of Eternal Bonding!" "Well, here are photos from when Aymeric and Ysayle got married!") Etc.
Endless potential for silliness!
I aim to make my posts engaging and entertaining, even when you might not agree with me. And failing that, I'll just be very, VERY wordy.Originally Posted by Packetdancer

So you're saying that a Japanese MMO produced by a Japanese company made a summer event with Japanese-themed aesthetics to be enjoyed by players worldwide, is based on an American holiday?
...Alright.

Oh well I guess it's not entirely cancelled, it's just being fused with something else and changing location. As I've seen here, it seems its confirmed Halloween's event will be canceled, and instead we will get the Gold Saucer one with some of the Halloween planned rewards.
I'm on the fence about it. This could be great or not so great. Moving the event locations can freshen it up a bit but considering how the Gold Saucer works in terms of its rewards this might not be received very well.
I'll reserve my judgement for when it actually happens.

The holiday is themed around fireworks. 4th of july is the only holiday I know of where fireworks are the main gimmick
