Shield Swipe's block procs and Low Blow's parry procs were a factor, but Blood Price and Shield Oath were the bigger offenders during StB. Tank stance MP/gauge generation wasn't fully reliable compared to MP/gauge generation in DpS stance.

Where as Paladin's Sword Oath generation was a flat 120 per minute as long as you stayed in auto-attack distance, Shield Oath generation varied with the number of Holy Spirit casts and the number of block procs. This was a fairly major factor as Sheltron blocks were a significant portion of the Paladin's MP recovery.

While Blood Price gave out a fixed minimum of 20 Blood over 15s every 40s, it gave out additional Blood and MP when ever the dark knight was hit while the buff was up. This caused blood Price to be very swingy MP and blood generation. It was great when tanking large mobs but sucked if a boss regularly stopped attacking to cast something or used mostly avoidable AoEs.

Your toolkit is just there to survive a TB and soften healer requirements while you mash out your bland 1-2-3.
Even as far back as ARR, depending upon the amount of guaranteed damage a boss inflicted both Warriors and Paladins were both finishing bosses solo after the healers died. Heck, in multiple runs of Amaurot I've kept both DpS alive long enough for a kill after the healer died on both the first and final bosses.
