They've already done this with Minfilia, though. If "someone the Warrior of Light cares about dies" is the metric by which how well it worked out is measured, then his gambit with Minfilia hardly worked out at all. She's well and truly gone, and no amount of "But Ryne" or "But Norvrandt" will make up for her death. And yet the only person to begrudge Urianger for his scheming is Urianger himself. Everyone else got over it or never blamed him to begin with. They certainly didn't go and blame or try to ostracize Thancred or the Warrior of Light for it, nor did Thancred or the Warrior of Light start refusing to cooperate with them over Minfilia's death.

If they weren't willing to draw this melodrama out from Minfilia's death, then who?
