I have discovered that all communities in every MMO say they are better than all the others, but really, we are all just human. That's a cute jump to conclusions. Still perpetuating the facade, I see. The FFXIV playerbase can't be bad! It must be me!
Actually I just enjoy a cooperative experience where everyone contributes their share of the effort required to beat the duty.
FFXIV has become...not that.
I dunno man, that's true to a point, but this game's community has been FAR AND ABOVE more welcoming and understanding than League of Legends or any of the FPS games I play.
After leveling everything to 80:
When I tank, I wish I had healed because other healers generally aren't that great.
When I heal, I wish I had tanked because other tanks aren't that great.
Basically there are a LOT of sub-par players in this game. I don't mean at the EX / Savage level. I'm talking basic Dungeon Finder players who don't know how to play their job effectively or are just lazy.
Veteran healers don't care if we need to heal, but right now we don't. We want interesting things to do during the downtime other than a 30s dot and a single filler spell that hasn't changed from lvl 4 to lvl 90.
Dead DPS do no DPS. Raised DPS do 25/50% lower DPS. Do the mechanics and don't stand in bad stuff.
Other games expect basic competence, FFXIV is pleasantly surprised by it. Other games have toxic elitism. FFXIV has toxic casualism.[/LIST]
You can't really compare MMO to MOBA/ FPS communities though.
Those are, by nature, completely different. MMOs always had a heavy emphasis on the social aspect while in FPS and MOBA that is basically non-existent because the goals are different. MMOs offer a lot of things to do outside difficult endgame content and are suited to "just spent time ingame" while FPS/ MOBA are heavily competetive and don't really encourage "just playing a bit" or social interaction. And the fact that you're heavily dependant on your group's performance is also a huge factor why FPS/ MOBA communities are generally less understanding and short-tempered.
They target completely different audiences so it's only natural for them to have completely different communities aswell.
While many MMO players view FPS/ MOBA players as a bunch of toxic, ranting little kids, many FPS/ MOBA players see MMO players as a bunch of whiny little princesses who cry when you don't cuddle them.
And neither are completely wrong...
Then: "Hm... people keep saying that FFXIV has the friendliest community of any MMO out there and that it is this super magically nice place. Let's see..."
Now: "It's just another MMO community. Just as toxic as WoW, just as friendly as WoW. Just a little pretentious at times."
I also never had any issue, here or in any other multiplayer game I played. Mostly, because I follow the rules and behave as I'm expected too (even if I consider said rules overreaching). Not saying you're wrong at all as I don't have any info/experience to say otherwise, but my personal take is it's likely the whole ToS situation has probably been overblown. To me it seems far more likely that a few people who were toxic jerks but swear they weren't got justifiable bans for "just trying to help" and then started complaining about the ToS which led to a chilling effect. Maybe the moderation team is completely inept but I find it hard to believe that someone would get sanctioned for legitimately being helpful even if the recipient of the advice took it the wrong way.
Once again, though, no personal experience with this. I just know that when I have tried to actually communicate in game and be helpful (or to ask for help myself) I've never had any issues.
Still, allow me to use an example:
Saying: "If you are using single target combat when three or more enemies are available, you are doing it wrong. Use your AoE combo instead" According to this: "Expressions that compel a playing style" is an "Offensive expression". If reported, that account will be sanctioned by a GM.
Sure, is a blunt way to say it and can be worded better, but that's exactly my point. New TOS force anyone to be extremely careful with how they word anything, just in case someone feels offended.
Another two examples I will like to use are:
A) In an extreme trial, a player is doing very low DPS. Another one said this: "Your DPS is trash dude. How can you be so bad at this game? You are a ..... of ...." After that, our low DPS player is kicked from the party.
B) Same scenario, but this time the player said this: "X I'm afraid your DPS is way to low for this. None of us are good enough to compensate for it." Then, this same player gives helpful tips, like how to quickly improve his gear or pointing him towards good information about his class rotation, before removing our low DPS member from the party.
Example A is a dick and a GM will pay him a visit in any game I played. However, B is only a problem in FFXIV.
We also could go into detail about how vague all rules are and the ever-present: "...offensive to another person" is.

ARR: I thought the community was great while leveling. Area chats were usually going, fate groups everywhere. I met a lot of people and made quite a few friends through dungeons, esp. those that stood out to me. Community had its ups and downs.
Fast forward to ShB:
Everyone just feels like a shade of grey. All DPS and healers AOE, tank pulls everything. Nothing interesting or challenging. I barely notice anyone standing out in dungeons anymore unless they're majorly messing up. Even those that mouth off in group don't stand out. I see them regularly, esp in the 50 raids. And usually they don't have the guts to call out directly by name so I have no idea who they're griping at most of the time.
Overall, after coming back, I've had the hardest time making friends. I've added a total of 4 people to my friendslist since coming back a month and half ago and even trying to get a steady conversation going with them is like trying to break someone's leg. Forget FC's. They're clique-y and unhelpful at best to outsiders.
In the end, I feel like I'm just playing for story and glamour.
Ff14 was my first official MMO so didn’t know what to expect.
2017- Games fun, helpful community
2020- Games Fun, Helpful community, getting far too easy
I’ve been in most popular communities and FF14 is lax despite the complaints. I’ve had a few bad encounters, and despite how justified it all is nobody likes complaining about the game despite coming from enjoyment, but I don’t paint the entire community vile because Tig bitties the Healer got mad that I told him to have Esuna in his hotbar and never healed me during entire dungeon. He’s 1 person 5+ million people play this game
