My female Midlander has probably used about $40 worth of Fantasia, and I’m thinking about buying more.
Something about her just feels a little off. So I’m thinking about changing her back to Hrothgar.

If they were ever to do a wow style face revamp, I want them to add the new faces and not update the old ones. I went back once during a free period to see what had changed... my character... I promptly logged out, never to return. New faces - yes, changing existing faces - no.
Seriously. I don't know about WoW, but when Aion did the graphics revamp, I couldn't even recognize my own characters, so I logged off and uninstalled forever after many years of playing. If they were ever to do a wow style face revamp, I want them to add the new faces and not update the old ones. ....Why they did that? The character creation of that game was initially the main selling point, just perfect in everyway. Geez NCSOFT really buried that game.
They didn't change creation, they "upgraded" graphics so all textures changed, as well as some other details, in such a drastic way that it looks like way more changed. Plus they removed manes, claws and everything from Asmos that made them different from Elyos.

I was reeeeally unhappy with that. I loved my Asmodians. Now they're just Elyos with gray skin tones. Super boring.
WoW was a little different because they actually changed quite a lot about the character models even beyond what Aion did. Everything down to animations changed, and as faithful as they tried to stay imo they still ended up with some options looking entirely different. To the point where I know at least one person who stopped playing one of his oldest characters because he couldn't stand the way male Trolls run anymore.
For FF, I'd just want new options added and restrictions lifted in the character creator. The graphics are still pretty good barring a few bits of texture weirdness, but the only thing I'd really want a straight update on would be some of the hairstyles. Some of them have noticeably... different... quality from the newer ones imo.

WoW's updated character models were utter joke :P
From human females being permanently surprised with their eyebrows being stuck two inches too high, to the wonky night elf run animation, to the strange solid blocky beards and facial hair on males, to the big cutesy crossed anime eyes they stuck on females including Orc or Troll, to the strange chunky gorilla arms with no wrists on multiple male races and so on, it was an unfinished hideous mess and needed multiple "fixes" after release. Making a character on WoW basically boils down to trying to decide which face is least ugly.
FF14's character customization lacks depth, but it's miles better than WoW's.

I also use face #3 for my Midlander. I think she's gorgeous.

Sure, the face looks a bit odd and puffy next to the others when you're flicking between them in the character creator, and you need to pick a hairstyle that complements it, but it doesn't look unfinished at all.
"Updates" that change the character designs would be awful.

I haven't played since the first year it released, I think you can guess why, but anyway, that's... depressingly disappointing. There's a reason they have claws/manes in the first place as they are descendants (I don't remember of what), so the lore there now makes no sense with them :/.

We actually already kind of had a time in FFXIV rather recently where something about our characters was changed in a patch, and we were stuck with it. We received additional combat lines. For some people, they were fine, either because they fit or they didn't care. For people like me, we specifically went out to test the voices we liked, making several characters or checking out videos that recorded them all. Having our voices changed with no option to pick a new one sucked.
If they ever update character customization, at the very least, they should give us all a free character recustomization. Just like when you log on after you use a fantasia.
With regards to wanting more fierce faces and stuff, I feel about this the same way about people who complain about the midlander run animation. If you don't like it, but you still want a human type character, play highlander. We are the only race in the game with this kind of luxury. I do think the variety of valid midlander faces is being understated, and people are not trying hard enough with character customization. There's at least three faces I've used that can look good. Sometimes you have to make the character and give it a try rather than just quickly flipping through the options on character creator.
Your middie is lovely! ♥I also use face #3 for my Midlander. I think she's gorgeous.
