Exactly, yeah. We only hear about the Calamities that happened; we don't hear about the Calamities that didn't happen. The Warriors of Light need to succeed every time, but the Ascians just need to succeed thirteen times (or fewer), and once per era. And as the Ascians themselves have noted, if they failed this time, all they need to do is wait until the current Warriors of Light die of old age.

It was how things seem to work until events of 2.0 though.

Lahabrea dialogue at the end of 2.0 implies they are almost out of time and they must complete the rejoining soon or else they will never be able to complete it.

I have a feel now we may get a better understanding on why their time is very limited now by this so called "unexpect final boss" for Shadowbringer's storyline for 5.3 and probably end the long Zodiark/Ascian vs WoL/Scions Story Arc in 6.0 to 6.3 finally.

Though there is also the question what will the storyline be about in Season 2 storyline for a world where Zodiark, Ascians, Scions, and Hydaelyn are no longer the focus of the storyline but that is another topic for another time.

I've been replaying the story with great attention to detail this time for my LP, and I didn't get that at all from any of Lahabrea's dialogue at the end of 2.0.

Also I feel like analyzing that portion of the story now is something that's kind of like... well, when they wrote the story back then they weren't thinking about interlacing it the way they are retroactively doing. At the time it literally was just general vagary for ominous villain speech.

Though if I had to hazard a guess as to why they feel pressured for time or to get it done sooner, it would be that all of their service is taking its toll on all of them. Their souls weaken as Lahabrea's did from body jumping. The champions that Hydaelyn select only get stronger as the Ascian's work succeeds as well.

I'm really curious about how they will retroactively tie together the whole conversation between Nabriales and Elidibus, "Your intercession was not foretold." - "You object?" - "We question. Our plans are in motion, your intentions unclear." - "They survived the Seventh Ardor and are stronger now in the gift. Does that not intrigue you?" - "No, it does not." - "Serve as you will. We labor not at cross purposes." - "The wisdom of His plan will become apparent in time, when the veil is lifted from their eyes... and at long last they see."

If we apply what we know now to this old conversation, it shows that basically Elidibus who speaks for Zodiark has noted that in the first 6 rejoinings, no one got stronger in the Echo. Upon the 7th Rejoining, every one who has the Echo awakened became stronger with it. As we know now, it's an ability that all of the Ancient Amaurotines possessed. When he first reveals himself to Minfilia he tells her that if she could master her gift, then her and the Ascians would be of one mind. When she attempts to stop him from leaving, he attacks her, and then makes the claim that Hydaelyn shields her from Zodiark's influence. Then briefly ponders if it was Hydaelyn's protection that let us survive the 7th Rejoining. He also said before he tried to leave that when we master the Echo we would be able to see Ascians in their true forms, instead of the crude approximation that our level of the gift currently allows us to perceive.

Clearly, the WoLs and Echo users of our generation are stronger than any previous generation. I wonder how much of the dialogue from back then will be cut away as villainous red herrings. It would be interesting to find out that, despite thinking we fought Emet-selch in his true form, that we still did not see him as he truly was.

I think the surprise boss is likely to be Zodiark himself with Zenos as the pilot. Zenoark weeeeeee

That might just be because the First was nearly ready and preventing the Rejoining was going to ruin the First just like how the Fourteenth was turned into the World of Darkness.

This right here. Based off of our own and Ardbert's actions and will power, we learn that WoLs accomplish much before finally succumbing to their own mortality, and 'much' is an understatement. What we don't know is exactly how many calamities have been prevented on each of the shards. However, for each calamity, there is likely a WoL who failed. That is inductive reasoning, but it's the only logic available currently when it comes to the previous rejoinings of the other shards. What we do know for sure without any shred of doubt is that Hydaelyn failed seven times in preventing the previous calamities. However, it is entirely possible that the Ascians got away with several rejoinings before Hydaelyn finally decided to get her children involved in the conflict.

There is also the notion that Hydaelyn's previous choices in a champion wasn't her choice at all; and that they have been simply individuals rising up and answering her call. In this sense, she basically knows that simply having the echo isn't enough, and uses some sort of filter to choose her champion among them and grant that person her blessing. After all, it is The Blessing that continuously thwarts the Ascian agenda. Whoo boy, they don't like that blessing one bit^^

We know that Warriors of Light don't always succeed. Unukalhai was the WoL for the Thirteenth, but was too young to prevent the Flood of Darkness that created the Void. Ardbert's team technically succeeded in defeating the Ascians on the First, but inadvertently destroyed the balance of aether and caused the Flood of Light instead (in his own words, they did everything right and still lost). And to an extent, there's the Legacy player characters, who (for anyone who isn't a character carried forward from Legacy to ARR) were lost in the Calamity.

The war between the Warriors of Light and the Ascians has been a lot more back-and-forth than it looks at first glance.

The Legacy players who came back didnt succeed either during Carteneau. We failed miserably and the only thing that stopped Bahamut from blasting Eorzea back to the stone ages was Loisouix and to be quite honest that didnt stop the 7th rejoining from happening just mitigated the damage it caused.

Edit: though taking in what Minfillia said when we talked her as the Voice of the Mother after the anti tower dungeon, to me it seems like they've only tried rejoining at that point (minus the 13th world which the Ascians themselves screwed up) 7 times. This is all due to her saying specifically that 7 times she tried and 7 times she failed. I'm sorta of the mind that she was being quite literal in that sense. *shrugs* I think if there had been other times she wouldnt have been so specific on how many times she tried to stop it. I can always be wrong though.

Difficult to explain without spoling the ending of shadowbringers.
Hydaelin didn't send anyone, except for her avatars. And the warriors of light where not avatars.
