Did she not send WoLs in those shards to stop the rejoining? Or maybe she didn't realize what the Ascians were doing until the 7th
Or may be she did but those WoLs failed?

My guess would be the tried and failed option. Technically that's what happened with this one. We weren't supposed to get involved and she didn't directly involve us.

Oh, I'm sure that she did. But they just weren't able to stop it in time. Remember Hydaelyn doesn't get directly involved, she leaves the decisions up to her children. She grants them a level of 'help' in the form of the Echo and the power of the crystals from time to time, but ultimately they're still just people and they can't stop everything. How are you supposed to stop a giant ice age? Or Lightning bolts from the sky? There have been heroes throughout history, sometimes they succeeded, other times they didn't. Sometimes when they get involved, then that was what led to the Calamity. Like what happened with Ardbert and company. But if you played through the Crystal Tower quests, then G'raha revealed that there were a group of heroes, the warriors of light in their day, were the ones who led the charge against the Allagans to put a stop their tyranny. However, the battle ended with the emperor locking himself inside the Crystal Tower and the sudden surge of power through the tower led to a giant earthquake... which was what triggered the Fourth Umbral Calamity. I guess that it all depends on the situation but all in all, they're still just humans and they make mistakes. They aren't perfect.
I'd say she did and they failed, yeah. We know there were WoLs throughout history besides the modern one, it's where the term came from.
Adding to the excellent answers above, it's also been shown that each of the 'gifted' can interpret Hydaelyn's words differently which can lead them to opposing each other, Ysayle being the notable and only example so far.
And remember, many of the higher voidsent we fight during the mhach story are former Wol, corrupted, thus, failed...
From the beginning it's been mentioned that there have been Warriors of Light in past eras as well, although given how effective Calamities have been at disrupting society little information about how successful they were is unclear (the flavour text in the Minion Guide for the Minion of Light states that "in every era there has been tales of Warriors of Light, who appeared to unite the peoples of that era, only to then vanish as Calamity rained down from the heavens" - paraphrased - suggesting they were victims of the Calamities or that they just disappeared, never to be heard or seen from again, possibly through supernatural means.).
Remember, the 8th Calamity was meant to claim the player's character's life in the process so it's clear that because Calamities were successful, the Warrior of Light at that time probably ended up dying as well in the process. Being the WoL and Hydaelyn's Champion definetely doesn't appear to be a career with a promise of a long life and happy retirement at least.![]()

Keep in mind the Ascians have never been this exposed before in their past attempts. From their dialogue and interactions with NPCS, they have alwaya gotten their way until 2.0 exposed their existence to the world for the first time where many of the past eras remained ignorant of their existence to the public leaving only the WoL of that era to know about them.
Didn't she? It is said over and over that with each Calamity, heroes would arise to attempt to forestall them. The Crystal Eye that Matoya allows us to use to discern the whereabouts of the missing scions is a Crystal of Light of ages past. It shows us that the size of these crystals and the strength of the Blessing of Light has been getting weaker each era.

Given what we know now, we may have been doing this for a very long time, with little to no success. Each soul that has the echo is almost certainly an Amaurotian. The WoL, Minfilia, Krile, Arenvald and a handful of others (such as our path companion in 1.0) may have been these heroes reborn to fight the Ascian threat. Recall the CS after the completion of the Antitower? I am of the mind that each of the people you see floating around the Mother Crystal are those heroes of the past, present, and possible futures.

Just my opinion. Won't lose sleep if you don't like it.
Also just look how much stuff we stopped, who knows how many calamities there could've been? Ofc we mostly dont hear if past Wol succeded, only if they failed...
