SCH/SMN issue just stems from a lack of planing and foresight. SE really doesnt put too much time into planning the jobs mechanically. Not due to a lack of interest necessarily, but due to just having too much other stuff to do. They will instead put more effort into planning the animations, and how to go about unique ways to do those, while also not increasing the work load, since most of the work in making classes is just the animations alone. But for general concept/gameplay/aesthetic, they have meetings where they spit ball ideas around, and thats practically 90% of the design process. (Going by what we've heard in small bits stitched together, from different interviews through the years. So maybe its different, but this is definitely the impression they give off)
I believe the SMN/SCH incident is what really got SE to not go beyond their iconic attack methods and simplified path. It probably really stressed the developers how they could separate SMN and SCH gameplay and stats during the early years of 2.0 and 3.0.

Chemist, I would really prefer a fantasy type healer personally. Fantasy always ends up winning out in terms of people actually using them as opposed to modern type jobs like mch/gnb.
Sword job is not really a issue itself but that most sword Jobs are going into Tank jobs because of maybe creativity reasons involving Swords being very easy to fit into a Tank Job Role. For DPS role a 2nd Sword job as a option rather than ONLY Samurai is something people want. We're also missing the Melee Magic DPS type job which would fit Mystic knight/Spellblade Job as that job has a long history of Magic infused melee sword attacks so it fits into people's desire for both a sword DPS Job and a Melee Magic DPS Job.

    We hav currently...

    Tank Jobs

Paladin - the Classic Sword and Shield
Dark knight - Greatsword and Darkness Magic
    Gunbreaker - the Gunblade/Tech Sword

    DPS Job
    Samurai - Katana Melee range
Red Mage - Rapier that practically does not exist because it is used mostly as a staff 90% of the time for Range Magic attacks.

Chemist is still fantasy themed thanks to Alchemist with the Job having potential of the lore being about Alchemist that discovered and decided to utilize the Alchemy type chemicals for combat use as Combat medics for people who lack talent in Healing Magic but still can play a role has healers for people. They can even link it to Garlean theme if the decide to use the Chemist Job storyline to expand on the history of Black Rose chemical weapon and the other scientist involved with the creation of Black Rose.

They would never do it, but I would have made "Chemist" the "job" upgrade from Alchemist. (Technically in reverse, if we're talking about the start of FF14, since alchemist makes more sense, due to creating objects with magic, rather than just combining them like a crafter.) It gains only 10% of the exp of a normal job, but gains most of its EXP from Alchemist. It's intentionally wonky, for the sake of being different from other jobs/classes. (The stone locks u to the 10% exp penalty, and allows u to enter combat content/story)

The best we will ever expect to get out of the Job storyline for Chemist maybe a few dialogue changes based on where our character is in the Alchemist class Storyline.

...Just spitballing, but I really enjoyed some of the fun builds I could rock in FF11 and wouldn't mind seeing a variant of them return in FFXIV; eg: A dual-axe-wielding DPS of some sort (Berserker?) or a frontline melee healer (think mace wielding cleric).

Also @ above few posts... an interesting idea to tie new jobs to DoH or DoL. I would never see it happening, but it is an interesting concept.
    (mentioned ALC -> Chemist)

Could mean using/expending their gathered/crafted materials as part of their ability set. (Similar to FF11's Ninja having items they actual burn through to do abilities)

I'd love Rune Fencer & Geomancer to actually be a thing. RUN more then GEO, but both would be great.

Honestly would like to see Chemist synched up to the alchemist craft job somehow. Would be a interesting twist on the job and could make items more practical with Chemist enhancing the buffs. Green mage I would love to see a magitek take on it, like it could be the garlean's way of artificially producing magic to attack. Both of these jobs I could potentially see as prime candidates if we ever go to Garlemald, and maybe we'll get some garlean rebels whom are against the current situation to teach it to us.

Elementalist, like I've heard some people argue before, is too similar to conjurer's elemental attacks already, so I don't really see it making it.

Necromancer I always wanted to see especially as a reverse healer job, ever since Edda basically became it. Though it's another one of those forbidden jobs... so idk how they'll implement it, other then maybe we eventually travel to the Thirteenth and get taught by the fiends there. That would be interesting.

Not even to fill a niche that WHM's recent changed opened?

Plus that didn't really stop RDM from having Eartn and Wind attacks

So with white mage losing the elemental aspects, are we just never going to see Aero, Stone and Water ever again for the length of the game? Are red mages finally the stone and aero mages?

But yeah, with fire, thunder, water, and blizzard being taken from CNJ, and now aero and stone, maybe they will allow it for geo, since geo/ast are practically the same as cnj anyways. *shrug* dunno. (Though RDM currently has the largest number of elements, only short of water, and blizzard.)
