The English language - or rather, any language - is constantly changing. Many words have multiple definitions. Some of those definitions fade into obscurity over time. Sometimes a word can start to be associated with something completely unrelated to its original purpose. In this case, the word 'mundane' is more commonly used with negative connotations. It suggests that something is bland, uninspired and boring when we look at the definition in an objective manner.

So I do find myself agreeing that it's a poor choice of words. Especially when the outfit itself is arguably gaudy and something that could have been easily implemented as a new reward for Titania EX or bicolour gemstones.

There's also a number of regional outfits that have yet to be added to the game. To say nothing of the fact that European players do not have access to the Black Fat Chocobo mount that was offered to Japanese and American players. It'd be nice if that had been added instead so everybody would be on equal footing.

2: characterized by the practical, transitory, and ordinary : COMMONPLACE
the mundane concerns of day-to-day life

Could also mean common place or ordinary too, which I think is part of the context here. Though to be frank, I think this is getting a bit absurd. Theyre just trying to be like "Spice up your wardrobe" as a marketing thing, Soooo yeah.
"Spice up your wardrobe" is a positive message, who doesn't like a little spice? Referring to you as dull is not a positive message. Mundane is rarely used positively as an adjective, especially when it comes to selling clothes. You'd advertise your clothes as "spicy" but you wouldn't want to advertise your clothes as "mundane". If your referring to your potential buyer with adjectives you don't want associated with your products, you shouldn't be using those adjectives on your potential buyer.

A reminder that they at no point directly referred to any specific thing as "mundane".

Would you have all made the leap of logic that they must be applying that description to in-game outfits as a way to sell their new one? Because I certainly wouldn't.

The advertising people probably didn't even think of it. It's a fluffy phrase to sell a sparkly fairy gown.

People also act like everyone who works on aspects of the game outside gameplay, music, tech and story are in Yoshi P's office daily. Whoever wrote the advert very likely did not walk up to Koji Fox on how to say something, nor the gear designers and explain how they would advertise in every language it came in. I bet they don't even know what the Neo Ishgardian gear looks like, because it's not their job.

Their job is to advertise, and from the literally hundreds of people parading it right now, I'd say it worked. Because that's what their job is. Whoever originally wrote the Reece's Puff rap didn't even have to try the cereal. They could have, but their job was to write a jingle to make it sound better than every other competing brand. And that's what is happening here.

"Go from Mundane to Marvelous", they are obviously talking to you since it's a call to action. They're not selling the product to the NPCs in the picture.

Have to disagree. Insulting your potential buyer is an actual marketing ploy, but you just cant do it on the fly and its very contextual.

"That glamour you have..its very mundane. Last season. Old hat...But this, this is the new fabulous! This is whats in. Whats Hot. Whats new. And you can be a part of that." It's all about framing and who youre marketing that too. People who are 'keeping up with the joneses' would be more receptive to this marketing tactic. Particularly if you had people who are 'in the know' sell it as such. Its all abut target demos and the way you display it.

That is the take away that Im seeing from this. Now you might personally got hung up on the word mundane, but I dont think most people would. Or at least people who this might be targeted at.

It's a common marketing tactic, but one that results in fewer sales because consumers inherently don't like being talked down to. You use it to target a specific demographic but at the risk of harming the goodwill with everyone else outside of the demographic, which is why it's a no-no. It's the kind of tactic employed by individual salesman trying to one up the other if they have the right charisma, but it's not the kind of tactic the whole marketing team would want to employ.

Transform from a mundane human into a faerie queen? Marvellous indeed...

This argument only started because someone has a serious vendetta against Crystarium gear specifically. People are reaching so hard.
