Is it time we had another free retainer?

Given the sheer number of crafting materials and other items now, its become quite a struggle for the crafter/gatherer to keep on top of different materials especially with the latest batch of ishgardian restoration materials needing to be counted twice due to only being able to get them approved in batches of 10

Fishers with all the various baits and Alchemy/Culinary classes alone take up hundreds of slots due to the number of different niche ingrediants neccessary.

Materia, loot tokens (raids, relics, eureka...), food, the list adds up over time and storing them all is quite frustrating.


If numbers becomes an issue, then restricting it to only be available when you have grand company high enough and at least 1 crafter and 1 gatherer at 80 would prune the number of people that acquire one.
Then those that don't need it will need to go out of their way to get it, while those that do will be able to acquire it without too much effort if they haven't already

I agree, having only 2 retainers is awkward at this point given how much junk there is in the game now. The Mogstation sells so much content now and the free event items have been unusually lame lately, I feel like FFXIV needs to step it up with the "free" content given we have to maintain subscriptions to even get them in the first place.

But i agree material bloat is getting out of hand, solution wouldn't be more storage but less different materials. Why would we need 5 types of logs for 1-50 when that stuff is trivial, why not replace them with 1
Do the same with ore's and sands and a lot of other drops

I've run out of inventory because there isn't enough of it and to be charging people for inventory space is a bit much. We should all have the same amount of inventory space or ways to expand it without it costing real life currency like it does currently. Make a warehouse inventory system specific for materials since there is so much of it in-game now. I hope they do something about it.

I brought this up at Shadowbringers release and got shot down fairly fast with "get better at inventory management".

As a maxed Omnicrafter, I've converted every material I own to NQ and dumped everything available from vendors or low value and I'm still just about managing with 3 retainers. At 2 retainers, you'd no longer be able to craft various items or gear for friends/FC on the go (even at 3-4 retainers you're stretching it), or attempt the Blessed Tools and things like the Skybuilder mats which can fill slots fast with the timed nodes and shooting mobs would choke your inventory. When you're constantly pruning your bags and restricting your gameplay that much to "manage your inventory", it starts feeling like a F2P.

It's definitely time for +1 free retainer, or at least a Materials bank.

I doubt they'd do it because they're charging money per retainer right now, but I'd absolutely love if they did. I spent like two hours cleaning and organizing my retainers the other day, purely because I quite literally ran completely out of inventory space while leveling my crafters. As in I had three full retainers (I'm already paying for one extra), a full chocobo saddlebag, AND a full inventory. The process made worse, of course, by the retainer menu being so clunky to use... but I digress.

Having a fourth retainer would be a huge help. The only reason I'm good with paying for a third is because I'm paying the reduced sub, so with one retainer I'm paying as much as I'd be paying for WoW or full access in SWTOR :P and boy does space still get tight sometimes

There is a very easy fix to all this, and we do not need new retainers. All we need is a new Vendor we can add to our home (or in the home instance area in general) that holds gathering materials for Gil. This way the "vendor" can hold level 50 gathering items or lower. That alone would free up most of our space. while at the same time not needing to create "a new item" that is a catch up, as well as to not mess up any of the "Gathering" quest, leaves, logs etc.

To those who say that this would mess with the Market boards, just have the default price on the vendor = 1-2k (or what ever you guys think is fair) this way regular "Gathers" could still make money.
