I was under the impression there wasn't a negative effect when people left, I've seen people still get the points for the mount after everyone bails. Is there a legit reason to be upset by this?

Less people fishing equals less opportunity for a spectral fish to be caught and lead to a proc and a greater likelihood to receive fewer score bonuses at the end of the run since that's mostly based off of numbers of fish caught. The fewer chances for a spectral fish being caught is somewhat offset by the higher chance of a spectral proc happening if someone does catch a spectral fish, but I don't know if it's completely offset or not. The fewer bonus thing is not offset at any rate.

If someone just afks instead of leaving, not only are they not providing any chances of a spectral fish catch or contributing to score bonuses, but they also block the extra chance of a spectral proc in the event that a spectral fish is caught.

In that case, if there was a penalty, wouldn't people just afk if things didn't go the way they wanted? Then you'd have less chance of proccing spectral and a lower bonus anyway cuz they didnt fish.

(I haven't done ocean fishing more than twice, got my mount on the 2nd go)

Yes. The only reason they leave now is that by leaving they can still enter a second queue in the 15 minute window and try again. This is why I'm more annoyed by the people who afk.

As for seeing people still get the achievement even if people leave, there's two things that might be happening. Probably both. Bonuses are party based, so if the people leaving aren't in their party then they're not being as affected as much as other people. Also, one party bonus is a 50% boost on top of whatever other bonuses your party builds up if you happen to catch 3 5-star fish as a group. Add that to a personal 5-star catch if you're one of the 3 and reaching a base of 5,000 points and you have a 90% bonus just from those three. Add the other bonuses your party racks up and scores can multiply pretty high with some luck. If you ever see most people at 6-7k and three players at 12-13k this is likely what happened. I'm assuming at any rate, since it's yet to actually happen to me. I'm just basing that off of the possible numbers that could happen in a run.
