The only real screwiness that made me double take this time storywise was when you meet Gaius in Al Mhigo again. My character's reaction like he was annoyed and about to fight him again just made me go... huh?
Why the hell would I still be holding a Grudge against Gaius at this point given that he saved Alphinaud, turned on and is fighting against the Ascians, and assisted Estinian in trying to hunt down their "magichemical weapon plant" and destroying it. Why in the hell would I consider him an enemy at this point?
Even the events of ARR are a long time ago in the timeline of the FFXIV world. Now we've gone from there.... to the Ishgardian story in HW, and the revolution in Al Mhigo and through an entire what was likely a year in a completely different world during the fight against Vauthrie and the Sin Eaters.

Two words for you my friend... Time. Bubble.
FFXIV's approach to timelines is wonky at best, but it's a hard rule that whatever point you are at in the MSQ, it's been 5 years since the Calamity. We defeated Gaius and Ultima 5 years after the Calamity. We ended the Dragonsong War 5 years after the Calamity. We liberated Ala Mhigo and Doma 5 years after the Calamity. We meet Gaius when he turns back up in Ala Mhigo... 5 years after the Calamity. So technically it's been less than a year since we were trying our damnedest to kill each other.
Add to that the fact that while we the player have been privy to various cutscenes and scenarios featuring Gaius working against the Ascians/Empire and with the Eorzean Alliance, we the WoL have not had as much exposure to him and are likely still getting comfortable with the idea of working with a former enemy.

Everybody ignores the Time Bubble, and with good reason too, it's nonsensical. If we make logical sense of time frames between events, it has been anywhere from 3-4 years since ARR's end. No lover of lore will ever accept "time bubble" as an explanation for anything. Two words for you my friend... Time. Bubble.

Your last sentence is very much correct though, while we the player have been privy to a lot of things, it's not surprising the WoL would be iffy with an alliance, not knowing exactly what Gaius has been up to or even if he's worth completely trusting. Though I have no doubt the events with Alphinaud have likely swayed us to not take action and have us willing to give the benefit of the doubt, for now.
We are all waiting for Y'shtola to bite the dust.
Sis has been alive too long, but as we know, she will probably use the flow spell again....and again.

They need to stop reviving characters. It feels very cheap.
The robed man talking to Zenos also looks like Asahi.

This has kinda been my beef with their storytelling since the start. If a character dies, let them...actually die. It's more impactful than saying "I know you thought I was dead but I totally wasn't!" Seriously, that's just plain awful. The possession thing is also starting to get pretty old pretty fast. At the very least have them possess some unfamiliar faces or something so we're like "whos that mysterious figure?"

Sounds like they ran out of ideas for new story NPCs.
I don't remember any dead character being revived. Did that happen in 1.0?
Why? How many times have they possessed a familiar face in the past decade? I can only remember twice, although a third might have been hinted. The possession thing is also starting to get pretty old pretty fast. I think Vahlnir meant "dead but not dead".
Like Nanamo, (Ilberd to some degree between 2.5 and 3.4/5), Gosetsu, Gaius, Yotsuyu, Zenos, Y'shtola (twice). And that's not counting Ascian possessing dead bodies and stuff.
I too think playing the "you think I was dead, but I was just waiting to conveniently slide in your DMs when the MSQ needs me too" gets annoying quite fast.
Back on Gaius, time bubble or not, he is the direct or indirect cause a lot of scions of the Waking Sands died. He is the cause of a lot of people somehow dear / close to the WoL dying. A lot of the blame fell on Lucia but Gaius was behind that scheme too. Even if he showed some compassion in 1.0, it's still quite understandable that the WoL still has some beef with Gaius.
