Also as someone who puts a lot of time, effort and gil into my glams, I DO NOT want to be seen in base gear. I understand that I pretty much have no control over mods, but I do not want to be seen in base gear ever. Just saying.

I put a lot of time, effort and gil into my own glamour pursuits. I wouldn't mind at all if other people were to see my character in base gear.

We can already turn down spell effects and tweak other elements as to how we see other characters - such as character lighting. It's not unreasonable for the development team to expand those options further, especially if they're client side.

we don't need options for the select few.

By that logic, gender locked gear should never have been unlocked.

Either people are all for more options or they're not. It's really that simple.
