The timer for ocean fishing is ridiculous!

One main reason, balance.
Second reason? So you dont spend 48 hours after patch doing it all the time and suddenly you never need to do it again. Ocean Fishing in its current state is a framework, the devs dont want you burning out on it before they've added anything interesting to it down the line.

In a living virtual world, you can't do whatever you want whenever you want.

It is supposed to mimic a "real" world in some way, and it's perfectly normal that some activities can only be done at specific times.

The game world isn't only built around your character like in a solo game.

Agreed. Every 2 hours is a few in-game days, that basically simulates a ship leaving every few in-game days. Its not like you can turn up to a port IRL and expect to be taken out fishing on the spot simply because you want to, things like trips out to sea take time.
That being said, i would of preferred if the ship actually MOVED rather than just being an instance, as that means it would have more of a gameplay reason to be timed outside of balance.

Do we own the boat we go fishing in in-game? are we able to prepare provisions and plan a route in a single instant as soon as we decide we want to go fishing? Is this hypothetical own boat open to the public to jump on and join you?

If it wasn't time limited, the ammount of players doing it would dry up too quickly, everyone would finish with it in a few days and never do it again, leaving those who want to do it weeks from now with nobody to do it, and thus the mount out of their reach.

I like the time gate actually. Small arbitrary inconveniences like this suprisingly helps my immersion, which has been on life support these last few months.

I'm guessing I'll be fine with it as long as I have stuff to fill up the time in between.

I agree with the timer. Its already bad enough that people drop out of it when you dont get the special weather after the first stop (barely a chance to get the mount) but knowing that this ride will end in failure and then have to wait so long for the next one is a bit annoying. Especially since there is nothing special about this content..the special weather just lets you catch more fish in less time..thats it.

Its not really fun to have to constantly fish not only to get our own price but to also not stop others from getting theirs because you only reach the higher points with group boni. Having a boat that would have gone to each new location after 15 minutes and have no strict point system would have been better imo. More time to maybe take a small break and talk to others and they could have given us some special events from time to time with special objectives.

It's obviously been done to prevent people from spamming it and becoming dead content in a week. At which point a thread "Ocean Fishing is dead content wtf SE lulz" would be in this threads place and people would be complaining. So damned if you do and damned if you don't. It's fine as is.

I mean that will happen quite fast with that timer too because as soon as people get their pet and mount I see no reason on why they should come back? Its just fishing but on a boat. There is imo nothing special about it and it will just be done by those that already like fishing or those that will want to level. And there you could have simply decreased the amount of exp you get with each run.

Honestly what great content is it even? Spectral weather is just a weather change, nothing else there is new. No objectives, no sudden horrible weather which we have to defend against, no attack from sea monsters, no other random encounters. Maybe we get that later but right now its just fishing on an instanced boat. Which such a short time that people who want to get some points cant even do much other than fish all the time. No interaction and its lucky to even get a "hi" in chat. And thanks to its mechanics by giving certain boni only through group effort and no punishment for people not fishing or for dropping out, this could turn into quite the troll opportunity.

Right. Because real life boat trips intended to haul in fish don't need planning, coordination, provisions, and preparation. Boat owners totally just go out to the uninhabitable open sea whenever they please.

I know FFXIV is a virtual world, but those playing it still live on planet Earth. Most of us anyway.

Sometimes you have to enjoy things instead of cut through them. There is enough content to pass time to board a ship again.

it gives me time to check retainers,trash the fish and prep for next trip.
