I'd be all for it.

I don't get the attitude in this game of "no we shouldn't get any nice thing because there's a tiny chance it might be abused by a small fraction of players/bots". Any QoL or feature that could have the slightest negative use is instantly shot down.

That said, these days everyone is on Discord it seems. Even my FC chat is dead for the most part because they're all on the FC Discord channel. I think they were talking about enabling Discord chat in-game, but not sure when that would be. And I feel like it wouldn't be allowed in FFXIV for some reason.

I'm on the fence about World Chat.

On one hand, great idea, especially as another means of people coming together, becoming friends, starting groups, etc. In alot of MMOs I've played, a lot of the best memories and good friends I've had were from random world chat conversations.

But on the other hand, World Chat can potentially(I'm not saying it will) add to toxic behavior, as some servers already have people attacking each other openly in public in-game chats, which can lead to issues in the long run.

But if I had to choose a side, I'd be for it.

Abuse in a world chat is handled the same way abuse in city chat is handled: Report and it silences them for you. Enough reports and the person gets a visit to the jail.


I guess to keep the bots out, it can be limited to a player above a certain level. Say 5. High enough that it isn't instant, but low enough that a sprout can still have access when needed.

True story: I spent a good portion of my time in-game this past weekend unlocking a bunch of level 50 dungeons and quests I never did or never even knew existed. There is so much to this game that was completely unknown to me when I started really playing it, which was around 2018. To this day, I still feel like I'm playing catch up.

I wouldn't mind.

I know one game where I used to be, you had to have a specific item in order to use world chat. Even like that thought, it still felt pretty overwhelming when you saw people having huge conversation with a bunch of inside jokes and all. Not that I mind thought.

On FFXIV, it would probably be either dead or overwhelmed with FC calls and bot spam, but hey, why not.

It's because of RMT bots.

Specifically, if newbies were auto-joined, the RMT spammers would just make spambots and start spamming the NN instead of just spamming the local area around the aetheryte in hub cities. Returners are (presumably) real players who have previously paid and all, so you have reasonably solid evidence they’re not bots and thus safe to join to the NN.

Sadly, any really reliable method for preventing RMT bots from spamming the NN would require some form of human oversight and intervention to make sure they weren’t just a bot. Such as making the network invite-only.

Yes. Also, I don't know about your world, but on Behemoth our mentors regularly invite novices.
