If we want to talk about the actual races (i.e. “Clans”) I’m more interested in what happens if say, a Raen and Xaela reproduce. Or Sun and Moon Miqo. Or Plainsfolk/Dunesfolk, etc. etc. I personally have my guy as half-Raen, but Xaela traits tend to be more dominant so for all intents and purposes, he looks like a Xaela (maybe with some very subtle white speckles and accents here and there) and generally is counted as one. In a similar fashion, every clan has their (legit) racial difference and it’d be interesting to see a scientific “mixed-race” person of the same species as an NPC.

If it works anything like irl human biracialism though, the kids could easily lean one way or another in addition to the possibility of looking like a mix. I actually came across someone else with a mixed race Au Ra boy, except in their art he’s got both black and white scales and horns. I kinda doubt that would actually happen so dramatically, but a more subtle version sounds plausible (i.e. there’s one hairstyle for Au Ra males that has white horns sticking out no matter which clan you pick; and of course there’s the fact even the default horns can be accented with the reverse color). Now, I wonder if a Sun-Moon Miqo would have both the cat eyes of the Sun Seeker and the fangs of the Moon Keeper. Hyur would probably work more like irl human mixes, but no one seems to mention ethnicity much with Hyurs, lol.

Fernehalwes: “As is indicated by the name, F'lhaminn is a member of the F (bear) Seeker of the Sun tribe. However, as many of you have pointed out, she has many physical features which are attributed to Keepers of the Moon (such as iris shape, skin color, etc). As many of you have also noticed, there have been other characters which have displayed the features of one clan, while following the naming conventions of another. This can be attributed to two factors.

One: It could merely be a genetic anomaly. Just because certain races have a tendency to display certain features (pointed ears, long legs, darker or lighter skin, soul-piercing eyes), doesn’t mean that once every thousand or ten thousand births, something deviates from the rules.

Two: It could be that a parent or grandparent was of a different clan, and the features of that clan were passed down. We know for certain that F'lhaminn was raised as a Seeker of the Sun, but we would have to look further down her family tree for clues why she has the appearance of a Keeper of the Moon.

Finally, some good news for our role-players who want a little more spice in their character’s history–in character creation for ARR, we’ll be allowing the mixing and matching of certain features between clans, so it will be possible to create a Keeper of the Moon-like Seeker of the Sun (or vice versa).”

Encyclopedia Eorzea: “The Lalafell are primarily composed of two clans: the grassland-dwelling Plainsfolk and the desert-dwelling Dunesfolk, with both tracing their roots to the south sea isles. Though slight differences in physical appearance have emerged over the many generations spent living apart, the two clans harbor no particular resentment for each other, and inter-clan marriages are commonplace, with many Lalafell today possessing both Plainsfolk and Dunesfolk blood.”

Encyclopedia Eorzea - Teledji Adeledji: “A Lalafellin man of fifty-five years, Teledji Adeledji was born to a Plainsfolk father from Limsa Lominsa and a wealthy Dunesfolk mother from Ul'dah. He inherited much from his parents, including their mercantile sense, and with that small fortune, he tried his hand at the moneylending business…”

Black and White scales can be explained through the trait being codominant, and in the Miqo case if the teeth trait and iris trait are independant then is posible too. Now im puzzled if hyur skin color is considered an ethnia or highlanders are.

Before this goes too far - I'd fathom that just like some races in the real world, those aren't biologically compatible and thus wouldn't produce offspring.

I'm taking Lore way too seriously. And I'm not sorry about that.

Given as real world genetic hybrids require a close genetic match between parents to produce offspring, and most beast tribes have very different biology (sylphs reproduce more like plants, amalj'aa are allergic to large quantities of water, pixies are the reincarnated souls of children, etc.) yeah, it's pretty safe to say they probably can't produce offspring with the spoken races or each other.

Some of the spoken races probably can't interbreed with each other either, while others can. [Hrothgar x Hyur] probably would not work, but [Hrothgar x Miqo'te] and [Miqo'te x Hyur] might. Also worth noting that most if not all genetic hybrids (ligers, mules, etc.) are sterile in real life.

(People will still imagine Hyur (Humans) can interbreed with just about anything, as is their wont.)

The game occasionally uses the word "humans" to refer to all of the player races collectively (and presumably Garleans, as well), which leads me to believe that the racial variants are similar to breeds of dogs - sometimes dramatically different in appearance, but all the same species and all technically interfertile. (I say technically because, while genetically compatible, sheer physical differences may make some pairings incompatible.)

However, admittedly it IS the case that all known half-breeds (Hilda, Arenvald, and the unnamed legendary Au Ra princess) have been the result of Hyur-plus-other, so you could be right.

Well Au Ra are basically humans who got voidsent DNA in their past somewhere. Makes sense that they'd be able to have children with hyur.
