Yda/Lyse/Minfilia are all highlander women who look like midlanders.

I'm not so sure these should be used as examples simply because they're characters from 1.0, and in that version of the game half the races were mono-gendered because they were imported from FF11 and that's how they were there (so midlander models were 'close enough').

That said, you're probably right that it does occur, as it would be probably be both easier and more accepted between clans than between the different races.

The child taking after the mother thing is fanon from an RP website, not canon. There is no case at all of mix-race kids looking like 1 parent only.

Arenvald has no Garlean traits. Although some Garleans aren't that different from Hyur anyway (see Cid), so it's hard to say for sure.

Alphinaud and Alisaie don't look much different from the other Elezen kids their age apart from of course their unique hairstyles and facial features so they never struck me as not being full blooded Elezen.

I was a bit confused by what race Gosetsu was and for some reason assumed he was a Hyur with a Roe model until he was outright stated to be a Roe. But I doubt he's a hybrid either because all hybrids are pretty notable (Hilda definitely stood out a LOT for that reason, even going as far as fo call herself "The Mongrel" because of that fact).

But who's to say there can't be some mixing earlier in the pedigree? ;p

It's fun to speculate regardless. Personally though, I'm more interested in how mixed "clans" (which would be the actual "races" as race is typically used) of the same "race" (i.e. species). I like to think for Miqo'te, the kids could have both the eyes of a Sun Seeker and the fangs of a Moon Keeper, and maybe some random traits from either.

Meanwhile, my personal headcanon for Au Ra is that Xaela scale colors are dominant because it's a form of melanism (which is typically a dominant trait) while the Raen's white scales are a case of leucism (which is typically recessive). At the same time though, the whites could manifest themselves more subtly like as little accents on the horns or even fully on small accessory horns. Similarly, Raen who have some Xaela ancestry may have some blacks mixed on the horns and solid black accessory horns.

Only pure-blood Garleans have the third eye so that doesn’t really count. And because of how the game is, almost all important Garleans are specially designed heads on hyur or elezen bodies. Less important Garleans straight up use an existing faces but have hyur ears and a third eye. It took me awhile to figure out what race some were.

There also doesn’t seem to be much rhyme or reason to who has a hyur body and who has an elezen one. Cid uses a midlander skeleton so he’s comically shorter than some other Garleans. The Garlean scientist also uses a full midlander body. Most other Garleans have elezen bodies including the faceless goons.

Well, he does have a lot of the Garlean physical stature more than Highlanders (not that Highlanders are not physically impressive themselves), and there was also the tragic aspect of his backstory where his mother thought a pimple in the middle of his forehead was growing into a Garlean third eye when he was still a young boy (which she promptly removed in the most horrifying way), leaving his forehead permenantly scarred (it's why he has that 'X' tattoo on his face).

Whether it really was a third eye is never confirmed, but the game definetely seemed to tease the possibility.

This reminds me of a time I was bored in Castrum Meridianum and was talking about how jacked Cid is for being a researcher. Dude looks like he gets his swell on at the gym at least 5 times a week. Someone in my party responded, "HE HAS NO WRISTS!"


I do wonder what Arenvald's dad looked like. Arenvald himself is a case of them wanting an interesting character, but only using standard character creator and nothing additional for his appearance. Garlean physiology is kind of intriguing. There's the talls, the smalls, the musculars, and then the Zenos/Emperors... practically the size of Roes, even without the armor.
