Because players these days are mostly bad, so as to answers OP's question, courtesy gets a comm if there is nothing else. Not sure why it is so hard to say Hi? lol to each their own

Make me laugh, get my com. If you are clearly enjoying yourself and make me enjoy the time I spent with you please, take my internet cookie. You earned it.

My comms are usually random unless someone stands out in particular. This could be someone who was talkative and funny. Or gave some advice. Or saved the party from a wipe etc. It's pretty rare that my comms go out for a gameplay reason, I generally only notice problems when things go wrong, and only notice stand out players when they correct things that are going wrong. In terms of gameplay anyway. I don't run act so I don't even generally know who's doing how much dps unless people are just being inactive.

This is pretty much it for me as well. If you toss a greeting out there, you're automatically a contender.

I will say, I do actually feel a bit bad on those rare occasions when the entire party is a lot of fun as I can only give out one comm. Thankfully, that's typically not a problem as most people I run into seem to be mute :P

I had this the other day in Prae, a nice conversation sparkled out of my random comment, and I wanted to comm all 3 persons I was chatting with, it was hard to choose.

Funny, I was just thinking about this today and how I will award comms based on various factors, although usually not skill related... first, appearance... was their character theme or appearance cool? Two, are they playing a 'frequently criticized' job... usually if someone is running a job that so many people criticize, I'll give them a comm for continuing to play them in spite of the negativity... SCH and DNC are two that I try to give comms to unless another player has more appearance appeal. Third, sometimes I'm stuck picking from whoever is left in the dungeon since so many players want to dash to the exits before comms can even be given. I find it interesting the number of comms I've been wracking up as SMN since I've started doing roulettes (I'm a bit late to the table on that)... but it's not like I do anything special, and yet I end up getting comms... can't help but feel it's only because I wait around at the end until most people leave... so I get the "whoever is left" comms.

By greeting everyone you're acknowledging they're part of your party, and therefore important, for the duration of the dungeon, and by shooting off a quick thanks or GG or whatever at the end you're thanking the party as a whole for helping you get through content you can't do on your own. That kind of acknowledgment feels good to a lot of people, and for a very great many is considered basic courtesy. That's why a lot of folks emphasize it. Runs where no one speaks a single word tend to be miserable feeling experiences for most.
Well, the fact that I can see your names in the top left corner of my screen is a pretty good indication we're all in a party. No further acknowledgement is necessary.

I guess I'm just a guy that enjoys the silence. I find a lot of chatting kind of annoying. Unless, like I said, I'm running something with my FC. Then I'm super chatty and we're all messing around and making jokes and solving the world's problems. But in a pug? Cut, print, and move on.

I will say, that if there's a sprout in the group, or someone says they don't remember something, I'll chime in with some advice on what mechanics to look out for. Sometimes I'll even say "I don't remember this." And a funny conversation might ensue. There was one time while doing Odin, we wiped. I said in chat we need to get the spears down. The second attempt was fine and we downed him. I was surprised to see that I received all seven comms in that party.

My performance wasn't particularly noteworthy, but I'm guessing it was because out of the entire run I was the only one to say something, and it was guidance on how to complete the trial. So, in situations like that, I can see why it was appreciated.

Letter from the Producer LIVE Part IX Q&A Summary (10/30/2013)
Q: Will there be any maintenance fees or other costs for housing, besides the cost of the land and house?
A: In older MMOs, such as Ultima Online, there was a house maintenance fee you had to pay weekly, but in FFXIV: ARR we decided against this system. Similarly, these older MMOs also had a system where your house would break down if you didn’t log in after a while in order to have you continue your subscription, but this is a thing of the past and we won't have any system like that.

I give it to the tank that turns off their stance rather than leaving it on with the other tank as well. Idc who's MT, but one of you needs to turn off your alpha-male factor so I can heal properly. If you accept being OT, I'll gladly comm you for being the better tank in that situation.
