Apparently their horns function as ears, picking up sound vibrations. At a practical game-design level, it seems to be so they don't need specially designed hats.

Question to Miqo'te players: Does knowing that your character is hiding a scary little secret make you enjoy them any less? More?

Which secret exactly..? The fact there is only one pair of ears was pretty much obvious with all short haircuts.
Also... hard to not enjoy the race that can so lovely wiggle their ears. I can't say for sure about female characters, but ask any male Miqo'te to show you /joy emote and you will see. And that how a lot of our emotes are.

Also, I absolutely don't get what's weird about not having ears on the side of your head when they are already on the top of it. It would be much, much weirder if they had four ears. Animals that have their ears on the top of their heads are normal as well, aren't they? But maybe I'm just already used to anime-like characters with animal features.

I think the weird part would be how the ear canal and everything works on a human head. Granted, I'm no expert in human biology.

It didn't look as weird with FF11 Mithra because Mithra were more feline than human. Miquote are literally just Hyur/Hume with cat ears and a tail. They don't have feline eyes, nose, or fur on their skin.
