No I would say it was pretty much immediate.

The Horde allying with cannibalistic undead is the first time I was like "oh no" and that got announced before the game was even in beta. It gets worse when you consider they were the exact same humans who used to enslave them and then they're angry at the Stormwind humans who had nothing to do with that. You can handwave it as a lot of the Horde finding it questionable as well, but at the end of the day it was just the first example of WoW's continuity taking a backseat to gameplay concessions, since they wanted one of the four main races from WC3 to be represented somehow and they wanted orc vs human racial tensions.

Why were we fighting Illidan in TBC again? Why did the Argent Crusade decide to set up shop on Arthas's doorstep and make a big tournament where their allies kill each other and then were shocked when both of those things turned out badly?

Shame about Mists of Pandaria, though. The pandaren and sha lore was really creative and a huge breath of fresh air, but it took a backseat to everyone being surprised when the warmonger Thrall installed on the throne started causing wars.
