There are definitely conversations where it may be relevant to the conversation going on, but it's almost always first thought when I see that:X
I agree with you. When someone drops their gender and/or sexuality out of the blue is a big red flag.

I play a female character, and I am female irl. And you're always assumed as a guy. If you're on discord with them? "Watch out guys, they're probably using a voice changer" you're in their FB group? "Watch out, could be a fake profile". My now-husband irl that I met in this game and his friends were saying stuff like that before we got together.
That being said, this was during a time when another FC member was cat-fished by dude pretending to be a woman, so I don't blame them.

(The dude who was cat fishing claimed his mic was broken, and he uploaded a picture, that, through image search, was an Instagram model with a completely different name. Their Skype outed him in the end, as it had his full male name as part of his email, lol.)

-But yeah, those cat-fishers are probably the reason why there's a lot of animosity towards men playing female characters in general.
I assume that there's probably women who catfish using male characters, but it's less prevalent, which might be why people don't mind that much when a woman plays a male character vs when a man plays a female character.

I think it has a lot more to do with what people are expecting.

We can't see each other other than through avatars. So we make assumptions of gender based on what gender the char is and thus we expect the irl gender of the person to agree. Female character expects female irl. Male character expects male irl. People get their hopes up. Act a certain way. Start getting attached. Gender roles subconsciously start applying themselves. And then when you find out that the female avatar is actually a dude irl ? Betrayal !

Nowadays though, people now (probably safely) assume that female characters are in fact male irl in order to shield them from certain disappointment. This is just my theory.
But same goes both ways. When guys realize that a male avatar is actually a female irl, I've seen some get stumped, go quiet, or even ask the person "shouldn't you be playing a female?". Gender role application in games. Ahah.

It's pretty easy, especially when you see the ones dressed naked with the new Nier bottoms. It's all about the ass.

Looks silly to me, but to each their own. After decades of gaming, comics, and anime, I'm used to it.

I think plenty of people take advantage of this in games.
Haha no way in hell i am going to change into male and let you get all the goodies! Tis is how free market works lol

I'd better fix that!") and you don't even seem to realise the irony they're aiming for - that if they were dressed scantily from the start, you would assume they are male playing with a female character.

Your original post makes assumptions about male vs female intentions that are simply unfair generalisations, and you're being called out for it - but apparently the sarcasm isn't getting through.
I was indeed being sarcastic but wasn't calling him out for those things(or didn't intend to come off that way). However the thing that happens a lot, especially in-game, is assumptions and generalizations. I know that unfortunately it is this way due to historical reasons. We can all say that female characters dressed like prostitutes are men, but it may just be that it is a woman in reality and such style is truly her thing. Can't really know for sure, and in my case, I just don't bother telling because it's not important, and it shouldn't be, but knowing what you are is a big deal to some people.
