On second thought, I think you may be on to something with Mascot. It could be a combination of three niche and obscure jobs: Mascot, Mime and Morpher. (Wow, they all start with M. Good sign.)
It could essentially be a limited job that imitates monsters and takes on their characteristics by wearing monster outfits. It helps that X-2 Mascot has three distinct move sets and abilities for each girls. Like Moogle outfit is a support/healing outfit, Cactuar damage dealer, Tonberry enfeebler/damage dealer, and I don't know, a crab outfit that acts like a tank and blows bubbles.

Goal: they go out in the world learning from monsters and stitching their experience (that sounds dumb, but go with it) into custom outfits for battle. Weavers are quaking.
Niche: it'll need something equivalent to Masked Carnival. Maybe a Monster Arena like how the Cloisters in X-2 worked? This needs work, seems too similar to MC.

Still, pretty interesting concept.

Here's a real simple solution: Make Blue Mage a normal job. 'Class fantasy' is a nightmare meme.
