Also FF Tactics allows you to recruit chocobos to your party and have them fight as controllable units in battle, but that was a strategy RPG that does things differently to the 'main' FF series so it doesn't really count.
It a shame we got stuck with the dumb bird. As it pretty much useless. It can not hold agro as a tank. It healing is trash and it dps is trash. At less with the trust system they can do their job. If you where to go into a dungeon with 3 Chocobos. Well you are screwed.
