At this point I already gave up, which is sad because they avoided the question during the live letter.

Devs' behaviour is indeed weird, but these sound effects are broken. They are not different, they are simply broken. And it cannot be accepted.
I have played many games, with better or worse sound design, but i have never heard abomination like 5.01 GNB sfx. I'm serious.

I agree, I just don't understand why this decision was made, the original sounds just needed very little tweaking to be perfect, just a bit more volume and intensity. Instead we got sounds that are actually so bad, I puts me out of the game. They don't match at all what's happening on screen and it completly breaks the suspension of belief.Devs' behaviour is indeed weird, but these sound effects are broken. The very fact that this has been tested, approved and judged better than what we had is baffling.

I don't have a gnb, but listening now, the new sounds are awful. The old one sounded like a sharp blade "cutting" the air. The new one sounds like a blunt object "whooshing" through the air, kind of like the sound you get when you swing like a swimming pool foam noodle through the air. It's awful...
I was thinking about giving gnb a try someday, but now, nvm.
Oh and you know what the new sounds remind me of? Carve and Spit's sound for Darks. It's equally "whooshy" and doesn't fit the sound of a sharp blade cutting air.

It should sound more like a sword than a gun... because IT IS more of a sword than a gun. You could never actually "shoot" the gunblade back in ff8. The "gun" or bullets were just for enhancing the damage of the cuts.Honestly I wasn't much of a fan of the original sound effects. I thought that the weapon sounded too much like a sword, and not enough like a gun. It should be a hybrid weapon after all, right? So when I heard that the sound effects were being changed, I was pretty pleased (I was away on vacation when they were added). But after hearing them? Now, the weapon doesn't sound like a sword OR a gun. It sounds more like smacking something with a blunt object. So sure, I'll vote for the lesser evil to get the original sounds back.

If they layered the two sounds on top of each other it would be almost perfect. What we needed was the original slicey-dicey sounds with deep percussive gun shots.
All we really needed was our original sounds but take the explosion/trigger portions and up their volume specifically to match. Everything else was perfect (except fated circle, I welcome that one change). Here's to hoping, if anything they ignored the question in the live letter because they're clearly so aware of it that they're working on a fix for it.... ya know... hopefully.
No, the old sounds were too loud and obnoxious. Much happier with how it is now.
