I gotta say, I'm liking the idea of Aether being present in the Void, but agitated to a state where it's unusable by life - hence the Voidsents' eternal hunger. It meshes well with what we know of the Flood of Light - the Aether is still there, but calmed to a state where it's unusable by life. It really opens up the door to the concept of the Void being salvageable.

There's still the question of who we'd be salvaging it FOR. There's no one left alive to repopulate it. As far as we can tell, becoming a sin eater or a voidsent is irreversible. I guess the voidsent might stop invading other worlds, given that they'd now have plenty to eat on their homeworld. But if anyone were to settle there, we'd need to clean up the Voidsent first...

Yeah, if we ever do wind up fixing the Thirteenth, I think it's safe to say that Voidsent will remain a problem for a few generations, at least (and certainly well-beyond the scope of the game). That way, SE doesn't have to explain why there's still Ahriman floating around Northern Thanalan or whatever, when the Thirteenth is now a whole and happy world. I could see us being instrumental in setting in motion some kind of process that will restore the Thirteenth over time, just as I imagine will happen with Eden. I've little doubt that by the time we're done with E12, all six elements will have been restored - and will be slowly spreading across the Empty.
