Except FFXIV was on the non-refundable list on steam for pretty much always? So no, this is not the reasoning. It seems nobody has actually mentioned the reason SE is actually doing this: It's to stop one major exploit of the steam refunds system that RMT bots and sellers are currently using.
Remember that steam allows you to refund a game, no questions asked, as long as you do it within two weeks and as long as you have amassed no more than 2 hours of play time as counted by the steam client.
All this change will do is make sure that steam can accurately count the time spent in the game. It will not magically stop the game from working because unlike ESO SE has not offloaded their login authentication to steam. You can prove this to yourself by starting steam in offline mode, FFXIV will still work, ESO will not. And steam still tracks total playtime while in offline mode so SE has no reason to disable offline mode.
If the overlay causes you frame drops, disable it.
This whole situation has me annoyed. I thought when they decided to push back this change, it'd come with some reconsideration and eventually deciding against it.
DRM in a nutshell. The people it's meant to impede will just find ways around it, sometimes before the product is even commercially available, while paying customers suffer.
I'm sorry if this was talked about or is not part of this topic I have a questions about playing thru Steam. I bought the game and all expansions thru steam not to long ago and I'm almost of of the free game time I was given, my question is do I have to pay for the sub with my steam wallet and if I have to can you partake in the limited offers eg: for a 60 day sub there giving a free phial of Fantasia. No need for a quick reply I have 14 days left on my free time.
I can't speak for how you can pay for a subscription on a Steam-bound FFXIV Service account.I'm sorry if this was talked about or is not part of this topic I have a questions about playing thru Steam. What you should be able to do with any accepted payment option regardless of what kind of account you have is buying Game Time Cards (ie. the Fantasia offer from the SE Store or the occasional "buy stuff at Amazon for X$, get promotional stuff for XIV" deals) as you simply purchase a code that you then enter on the Mog Station and charging your SE Account with Crysta (SE's made up currency equivalent you can use to pay for your subscription, Mog Station purchases and optional services) since from my understanding your Crysta balance is on your SE account, not the individual FFXIV service account.
Currently as a Steam user I manage my sub on the account part of Mogstation. I have the option to use my Steam wallet there but I never use it.I'm sorry if this was talked about or is not part of this topic I have a questions about playing thru Steam. Ok ty the both of you :-)
Signed!! This is wrong! I didn't buy the game with these conditions!! D:
I don't like launch steam every time I play!!
Replying for visibility because this is one of the most idiotic changes SE has thought up in recent history. This is the only MMO I know of that you can purchase through Steam that will also force you to launch it through the Steam client. This is most likely yet another case of SE attempting to plug some minuscule "hole" in their profits at the expense of their customers.
This should never happen if only exclusively for the reasoning that if the Steam servers go down then it also means that people won't be able to access FFXIV for that period of time either, playing a separately paid game should have absolutely no connection to Steam whatsoever.
I hoped they learned their lesson about handing things off to middlemen with Vegas last year, but apparently not.
I can only imagine the number of legitimate paying customers they're forcing this on despite it never being in any terms or agreements when they paid for the product through Steam. All for the sake of more than likely an extremely minor percent of people committing some unspecified type of "fraud".
Right now steam shows me that there are 24,965 In-Game via the community hub, for FINAL FANTASY XIV Online. So if this change is made in a way that breaks authentication I expect it will impact tens of thousands of people...
I also double checked the store page and it clearly says, "This product is not eligible for refund. "
I would throw another $60 or whatever to add the normal windows client to my account, but if not given the chance and if the game becomes unusable (broken login for weeks like ESO...) I would be worried about losing my house because of course when you cannot log in for a long time, you lose your home too. I would certainly never play the game again if that happened.
Signed. I would also like an option to migrate my account, or at least an option to buy the non-Steam version and retain my license.
When I tried to make the swap to Steam earlier today, deleting FFXIV apparently also meant that your mail and saved messages get deleted as well. I have some mail and messages that are precious memories to me, and I do not wish to see them deleted. Of course, I can always take pictures of each mail and message individually, but I would rather not it have to come to that.
