Still absolutely hate this. Square, I'm willing to completely rebuy a non-steam version of the game + expacs to get off of steam if you'll let me. Please let me give you money to escape steam.

Signing the petition in hopes it helps bring attention to this issue. I do not use steam for ffxiv (nor would I recommend it to anyone). SE should allow players to switch their accounts over. This is extremely unfair and a really bad business practice. By signing their playerbase over to steam for more exposure, they've just sentenced their playerbase to steam's conduct, which is a really poor light on SE.
Yoshida redid FFXIV 1.0, he should also push for SE to redo their customer service. It's sorely needed in many regards. I hope SE sees this and updates their commitment to ALL of their playerbase on all platforms![]()
I'm pretty sure SE cannot change a thing about this as they will have a contract with Steam. I'm sure it is Steam who has insisted upon you only being able to buy expansions from them and now you have to launch via their app - SE would I guess love you to buy direct from them as they would get more $$$
This petition is useless. Save your time and dont bother. Sqx wont do anything. Steam wont do anything. We are like how many? 300 or so people.complaining here. Thats not even .1% of the population xd
There's absolutely no reason not to voice these concerns now, whether it goes anywhere or not... especially since there seems to be a fair amount that they haven't told us about this yet. As far as I've seen, they haven't said anything about how this will or won't impact our actual ability to play the game. Not a fan of that, considering other games have had problems with this in the past.
If it turns out the people worried were right, and this does cause a bunch of problems, I'm willing to bet SE will start losing $$$ over it. You can bet I'd be unsubbing in a heartbeat if things get half as bad as they apparently did with ESO.
I hope that doesn't happen. I hope this is just a minor annoyance. But we'll see.
And if it isn't? Well, I guess we'll see if SE continues to do nothing then.

They will lose for first few months at best and amount that isnt even 1% of the money sqx make from their mobile games. I am sure they will take losing 1% for a few months over making things worse with steam and potentially break ToS. Good luck unsubbing, will see you again in few months. There's absolutely no reason not to voice these concerns now, whether it goes anywhere or not... especially since there seems to be a fair amount that they haven't told us about this yet. It seems nobody has actually mentioned the reason SE is actually doing this: It's to stop one major exploit of the steam refunds system that RMT bots and sellers are currently using.
Remember that steam allows you to refund a game, no questions asked, as long as you do it within two weeks and as long as you have amassed no more than 2 hours of play time as counted by the steam client.
All this change will do is make sure that steam can accurately count the time spent in the game. It will not magically stop the game from working because unlike ESO SE has not offloaded their login authentication to steam. You can prove this to yourself by starting steam in offline mode, FFXIV will still work, ESO will not. And steam still tracks total playtime while in offline mode so SE has no reason to disable offline mode.
If the overlay causes you frame drops, disable it.
You're making an awful lot of assumptions there. Do you know what percentage of the playerbase bought the game through steam? Do you know how much money SE actually gets from those people on subs and microtransations? They will lose for first few months at best and amount that isnt even 1% of the money sqx make from their mobile games. I am sure they will take losing 1% for a few months over making things worse with steam and potentially break ToS. Good luck unsubbing, will see you again in few months.
Do you know for a fact that this was a Steam decision? Because SE says explicitly in the announcement that it's part of their fraud prevention measures, not Steam's. There's no mention of any obligation to Steam in there.
Also, I said I would unsub if this causes problems with playing the game. But your snark is noted.
Alright well, if that's true, then it really will just be a minor annoyance. Here's hoping they don't tack any other changes to how this'll work on top of this. All this change will do is make sure that steam can accurately count the time spent in the game. This is because the change is not actually implemented yet, so ofcourse it would still work.It seems nobody has actually mentioned the reason SE is actually doing this: It's to stop one major exploit of the steam refunds system that RMT bots and sellers are currently using.

Unless they start linking the Steam username to our actual XIV service account it's not going to make any difference though. All SE has said is that you'll need to launch the game via Steam.
The RMT people would just need to have one Steam account where they don't refund the game and launch it from that one account. Then the game accounts they're buying on Steam/refunding they can keep on doing that as those Steam accounts won't have any playtime still.
So if that is the reason then all of this is for nothing as it won't impact on the actual RMT, only on actual players.
And if they do want to link Steam account -> XIV Service account it's going to cause a lot of problems for people who were gifted codes for the game by friends because the game won't even be in their Steam account and if they buy it themselves it won't be the code they actually used (as in friends gave them a code to redeem instead of purchase as a gift).
