Not saying everyone is bad, but there is quite alot who are. I used to play WoW myself back in the day when it was still a good game lolI'm one of those WoW immigrants your mother warned you about and I've probably run into more intense toxicity here than in WoW. It's less frequent here but when it happens, it can be pretty gruesome.
Over in the Blizzard playground trash talking just means "Hello" at this point. It's goofy white noise.
Blizzard games in general attract alot of toxicity, Overwatch is a prime example.
But lets not derail the discussion.

I think it's more that Blizzard games attract a lot of PEOPLE. They also have more competitive aspects to their design and that can breed hostility at times.
But the toxicity that people constantly claim WoW has is a bit exaggerated. Even over there, the worst offenders are quickly shot down.
I doubt WoW immigration will cause a toxicity spike. That sort of thing will happen more due to this game aging and the playerbase losing its patience.
I disagree that we need more toxicity as if humiliation will make people better players (it won't). But I can agree that more transparency is probably warranted as well as a willingness to observe context (Is it toxicity, well intentioned criticism or someone trying and failing to be playful?). And, no, I've never been summoned by a GM.Damn near everything required other people in FFXI and there was plenty of (warranted and unwarranted) toxicity to go around. People are "so nice" in XIV because they're terrified of getting in trouble. This is why so many people here on the forums openly admit that they no longer chat outside of their FC/Linkshell(s) in-game because they're worried about upsetting/offending someone.
Honestly, I think this game needs more toxicity. People are far too accepting of absolutely horrendous play from other players. You're considered an elitist if you expect someone to perform base job functions or wear level/job appropriate equipment. You're met with "chill" or "relax" when you politely ask someone what happened or why they were or weren't doing something. I like to refer to the FFXIV community as " The Care Bear Community."

Could be yeah, though theres less moderation in WoW than FFXIV, so some may take it as a habbit to act the way they do, or in an elitist way. Popularity can indeed attract those people aswell, when you have millions of people to observe, some will get away with their behaviour. I noticed alot of toxic behaviour in end game raids and dungeons, with people using dps parsers, shaming those who don't do their prefered dps or people taking every dungeon as a speedrun, expecting people to be perfect in what they do.I think it's more that Blizzard games attract a lot of PEOPLE. They also have more competitive aspects to their design and that can breed hostility at times.

Then again, PVP or competetive play in general breeds alot of toxic behaviour, the reason why so many are friendly in FFXIV is due to everyone teaming up together rather than splitting the playerbase in 2.
