I am not sure what I think of threads like this one.
I have been a WOW player since late Vanilla. I was also in the beta for FFXIV and played since launch of 1.1.
I have been a hardcore raider in WOW, and a very casual one in FFXIV.
So what would you count me as? "WOW population?" "FF veteran?"
I have seen toxic people in both games. The main difference is that there are things FF guards against that WOW doesn't. Like certain mods that reduce you to a number.
Technically talking about DPS meters in game in FF can get you banned (or it could in the past). And don't get me wrong, I am very much in the mind of optimizing things, but I can almost guarantee that if certain mods were possible in FF XIV, the community would develop in a similar way. It's not just the DPS meters.
I have seen toxic FF players back in 1.1. It's not just a "feature" of WOW players. I remember the experienced FF player who was just trying to get his quick roulette in, laying into me because I DARED queue for a specific leveling dungeon he hated. From his point of view I "inflicted a shitty instance on players who just want to get their roulette done." That was someone who had played FF a lot, not WOW, and he was fed up with that particular instance.
However, here is something I did notice this expansion.
I have been grouping with a lot of people who have the novice icon. Just the leaves, so they are not returning players. They have never done the dungeon before because they say so, or the bonus message pops up. Obviously that's the first character they are leveling. Yet you see straight away that they either pick up the tactics, or somehow already know them (maybe they watched video guides), or they might get something wrong, but as far as playing their role in the party they are quite good. And really the people who watch guides are those who try to be at least decent and have been in the MMO world enough to figure out there are guides or to be in the mindset of watching them.
If they don't come from WOW, they might come from elsewhere, but the point is that you get more new, yet experienced players.
For a game to flourish you need to have an influx of players. If a game is good it will get one, so sitting here wondering about the impact of new people that played that one specific game you don't like is a little absurd. And a bit like trying to build a wall between the US and Mexico.
Let's not do this here and be the first one to be a decent human being. If you can't defuse a situation by being a decent person, it has nothing to do with WOW, but with the individual who just can't chill.
