They do that maybe twice for no name Amaurotines, but they use "he" for Emet-Selch, the first Halmarult and the first Mitron. One of the asks you if you are looking for your "mummy and daddy".I am guessing the gendering of the Ascian we come from during the conversation in the Amaurotine DMV is a mistake on the localization team's part, given the use of "they" referring to pretty much every other ascian. And, if our precursor had a gender, it wouldn't make sense for that to fluctuate depending on which WoL you are playing. They are a separate character than us, after all.
He makes that difference in german too. Its also interesting that he does not in any way calls us a friend in the german version (even though his comments about the 14th does hint that he at least knew them in some way). In German he says something like "Dont let me stop you my child", which is probably more to show the elder talking to a younger one bit.
He can also not really see Ardbert in that situation, just notices the color too.
The only way I see se not using a gender neutral name is if they go the route of our character name being the WoL's origin name. Which is something I've seen happen in stories and even other videos... granted that doesnt mean I want them to go that route.

Same thing in french. He makes the difference depending of the gender of your character. He also call us 'his not so new friend'.He makes that difference in german too. Another thing interesting is that he says he wouldn't be surprised if Emet-Selch realised we inherited the soul of their Ancient friend considering 'the affection' he had for her.

Please you're fueling my WoL x Emet-Selch shipping too hard :<Same thing in french. He makes the difference depending of the gender of your character. He also call us 'his not so new friend'.

It would make no sense to refer to a friend as they. For sure one would know their friend's gender?Same thing in french. He makes the difference depending of the gender of your character. He also call us 'his not so new friend'.

I'm very unfamiliar with French, but is there any difference in terminology for platonic versus romantic affection?Same thing in french. He makes the difference depending of the gender of your character. He also call us 'his not so new friend'.

I was actually hoping Emet-Selch would stick around a bit longer due to this apparent connection between us, so we could explore that dynamic more. Its very interesting to have a villain who used to consider your past self a friend, especially when he sees that past self in the fight and it actually causes him to momentarily falter. I was fine with the battle, but at the same time I wish he hadn't been killed off, yet.Same thing in french. He makes the difference depending of the gender of your character. I suppose he could still appear via echo vision or something at a critical juncture when the WoL is diving further into their origins. Ysale and Hauchefaunt's spirits help us with Nidhogg, after all. And of course, we could see him speaking with our past life in a flashback. I want flashbacks of Emet-Selch, Hythowhashisname, and our past self so badly right now just to get more of what that dynamic was like.
Ah, you're right. Ok... that makes it even weirder that the gender pronoun fluctuates depending on your own, though. Still wondering if the gender fluctuation is a localization "error". Do we know yet if the written Japanese from that Hyth convo specifies a gender or not?
Ah yes. That well known and respected 14th member of the Convocate, guiding light of ancient Amaurot, summoner of Hydaelyn and savior of our current existence.... McButts.
Yeah, i really don't want the characterization of our previous life decided by the player's choices, especially not that much. lol
It could be that Ascian society had room for a third gender. It's quite clear that in-universe, genderless, third-gender, or otherwise non-binary beings can be referred to with they/them pronouns, at least in the English translation, given how fey creatures are referred to as they/them in almost all contexts. If it's possible for Ardbert, a male character, to share a piece of the same soul as my character, Sjel, who is very much female, it's clear that the soul can be reincarnated as any gender or sex, and therefore gender and sex may be fuzzier concepts for the Ascians than they are for the mortal races. It's quite possible that a single Ascian soul has multiple concepts of gender and identity within it.
Either that, or my version of Ardbert is a closeted trans woman. Which, as a trans woman myself, I can very much relate. You be you honey. You be you. XD
I actually got vibes from Emet-Selch that we used to be his lover; which would make us Persephone.
... then I found out that the mystery person gets both him and her as pronouns, depending on your own character's gender.
So the name's out. (And probably, but not necessarily, the relationship.)
