Thinking of names associated with the 'real' Hades, I've seen Heracles suggested, and I had suggested Persephone. I've got two more that seem appropriate.
One of them is Orpheus; the legendary bard who descended into the underworld to retrieve his slain lover.
He pretty much did it too; made it out of the Underworld with her. But at the last second, he looked back, and saw his wife being pulled back under; his victory was hollow. Like ours.
The other is Sisyphus; the ancient King who was punished with the task of rolling an enormous boulder up a hill; and was promised freedom once it reached the top.
But every time it was almost there, the boulder broke free and returned to the bottom of the hill.
Sums up what the story of all the previous incarnations of the WoL must have been so far rather well, doesn't it?
I've often wondered what Emet-Selch's plan was had we been able to contain the light. Was he going to try to use us to cause a Calamity? Maybe repair the Thirteenth? It was never clear what his plan was had we lived up to his expectations, unless I missed it.I'm pretty sure he was hoping for us to be "complete" enough that maybe he could convince us to join him and raise us up as an Ascian like he talked about being done with others. After we appeared to fail to live up to this hope by all but turning into a Sin Eater, he gave up hope for that, after which point he was clearly angry with us for failing to become our past self again.
No, you didn't miss it, he never really said what his plan was beyond seeing if we really "measure up" to be caretakers of the Source (i.e., be as worthy as the Ancients).
He did talk to himself about "Maybe there is yet a way", etc. I certainly assumed he was gonna basically let us suck up all the corrupted light, go back to the source and then detonate us somehow when we got there. All he was saying to the Scions, in his "I tell only the truth, but still manipulate you with it" way, was there was a way forward that may not have to involve destroying the 1st with all the violence we'd seen as a result of the Flood up to that point. I fully expected we'd deal with the last warden, something would happen where he'd be like "Ok hero, time to go back home" and he'd try to pull off his plan. And then Mt. Gulg and Amaurot happened and now I'm just confused. More sympathetic, I suppose, but also more confused. lol

It could be that he never had a plan because his mind was made up from the start.
I think his plan was
1. let WoL collect all the light (or underpants if Feo Ul didnt throw them on the other fairies yet)
2. ????
3. PROFIT!

I have a secret to tell. From my electrical well. It's a simple message and I'm leaving out the whistles and bells. So the room must listen to me Filibuster vigilantly. My name is blue canary one note* spelled l-i-t-e. My story's infinite Like the Longines Symphonette it doesn't rest- TMBG Birdhouse in your Soul
A huge THANK YOU!!!! For FINALLY selling the Meteor Survivor Polo on the store. AND a huge thanks to my friend who bought it for me while he was at Fan Fest!!! YES I finally have my POLO!!!
When we failed to contain the combined Light of all the wardens, he said that he'd let the transformation take us, and the destruction we caused in Norvrandt would destabilize the First to again being primed for rejoining. More than anything it seemed like he just ultimately wanted his friend back, which is why he gave us two chances and was going to decide the value of sundered life solely by our actions, but wasn't willing to let that get in the way of his mission if push came to shove.
As a french, i can tell you :
In French, Hythlodaeus clearly say that Emet-Selch should have recognized our soul since "the affection" he had for him/her (our predecessor).
And more, when Emet-Selch see an Amaurotine in our place, he don't just say "No, it can't be" like in english (meaning he could just be surprised to see any amaurotine), but "How is it possible ? You ? Here ?" so he specifically recognized him/her in us.
The 14th is probably one of the Scions of Light that hasn't appeared as an Ascian yet, like Deudalaphon the Benevolent.
