There's nothing sympathetic about it. Their world ended thousands of years ago. Move the fuck on and stop trying to drag over a dozen worlds full of people into your pity party.

What is a few thousand years to an immortal really? Also a dozen of worlds worth of things which you don't consider human or think worth preserving in their current state. In a similar situation many would consider what he is doing, granted few would actually realize or admit it until such a situation presents itself.
