Higher Resolutions missing in 64-bit client

To clarify my question: is the 32-bit client actually rendering at 2880 × 1800, or is it rendering at 1440 × 900 and scaling by 2?



This is an enlargement of an image rendered by the 64-bit client (in windowed mode) on my 15in, 2018 MacBook Pro. The white box encapsulates a single pixel of my computer's display. The video appears to have been scaled by 2, probably because the client doesn't support Retina displays. The 32-bit client also scales the video by 2 in windowed mode.

That is definitely not happening for me. Retina should not be an issue. It's just a high res display with a low pixel pitch. As long as the resolution is supported by the GPU and the game there shouldn't be an issue, other than loss of frame rate. Mine has a native resolution of 2880 x 1800. If a 1440 x 900 image is being sent to the display then doubling like that would take place in the display, after the GPU. Any screen shot should be 1440x 900 without any doubling. If the game says it's 2880 x 1800 it's lying or something is happening to it. When I go to the 32bit client with 2880 x 1800 the image I see is much sharper and the screen shots reflect that, using both the game screenshot feature and the Mac screenshot feature. (it's also slow as heck)

This is really a problem.

There is a workaround with the app "Display Menu" : launch this app before FF14, choose 2880x1800 res, then launch FF14, then choose your favorite res in FF14 which is now available (2048x1280 for me). You can then put again your usual resolution on macOS after your game (or during it with cmd+tab, without affecting the res of the running game).

Unfortunately and until this issue is fixed, you need to do this every time you launch ff14

It would be nice if this issue would be fixed asap.

From what I understand with the retina display the screen is always in native res (2880 x 1800) but treats it as a lower res. The highest the system allows is 1920 x 1200, using the higher resolution to display fonts and interface elements at the higher resolution. So I guess the system is always using resolution scaling of sorts.

I was not using any third party software to scale. The 32 bit client went all the way to 2880 x 1800 not matter what resolution I was in. I noticed recently the 64 bit client will only go as high as the selected resolution at launch and since the highest normally selectable is 1920 x 1200, and that is the res I usually use outside of games, that was the max allowed in the game. If I lowered it before launching the game I would be restricted even lower.

So after discovering that I tried a third party app that allows you to select higher resolutions, up to the full native 2880 x 1800, which is really hard to see on my Mac book. After launching the game in this mode the higher resolutions were available in game. So it seems the game will always see the current resolution as the highest available resolution.

I will try reinstalling at some point, but that is several hours and it's a drag on the system and network even in the background.
