The only thing that's not clear to me is why FFXIV is the only MMO the requires the player to do the work instead of the system doing it automatically like literally every other MMO on the market, even other cross platform MMOs. But that's not something that we'll get an answer for.

None of the sources that you can buy the expansion from are the Mogstation. Mogstation is where your account is, even the SE Store is not run by Square. So yes you have to put a code in because none of these sources know what your mogstation account is, and that's probably a good thing. If they start selling on the Mogstation store, then I would expect it to link automatically. As for you never have to enter it for SB, did you buy the upgrade directly from Mogstation? If not then you had to enter a code.
