Yoshinori Kitase and the way SE incorporates player feedback

    http://www.next-gen.biz/features/yos...fantasy-xiii-2

I facepalmed on almost every reply.

Dear god I hope feedback of XIV doesn't go through this sort of broken phone communication.

I almost held my breath when I saw the last question about Toryama (why isn't he fired yet!? I mean honestly, why SE?) and after reading the reply I can't but still wander the same question that Edge asked Kitase.

    Good interview, good answers.

Toriyama can't make a proper story but he is a good asset nonetheless. There is no point in firing him, as he is a competent director, but they should seriously reconsider his role in the overall picture of things. He should be nowhere near the script team.

You know I don't think it's Motomu Toriyama's fault FFXIII had the flaws that it did. The artists on that game took in the HD era like it was heroin and didn't know how to control themselves, leading to areas that probably took a year to develop (Bodhum) that you clear in about 45 minutes. The problem was that as an organization SE didn't know how to operate a high-tech production in a reasonable timeframe. Crystal Tools was a fiasco and a misguided attempt to leverage HD era production techniques. That's why they had to cut out over half of the game, leaving the mangled mess that remained. They simply couldn't produce the content they needed in the time required. So I wouldn't single out Toriyama - if anything it's Kitase himself that is to blame, although I have the feeling it's more like the combined incompetence of many artist team leaders and programmers that is truly to blame.

So basically SE thinks every single change they make is for the best for the fanbase and we know nothing about what we want. Great. I guess we know what not to expect for 2.0 - _ -

I dont think its good to try compare this communication to XIV, you have a direct feedback source to XIV's development and developerz, and they get responses back and Yoshi posts regular news letters, even did the live, i feel Yoshi takes the feedback more to heart than the SP game developers do.

They should know that the truth hurts and stay low profile about it.

It's been pretty much established for a long time that FF fanbase is a headless chicken waiting to be put out of it's misery.

I think the same way too. The XIII-2 devs are out of touch with the player base (yet it still sold tons of copies because it's a FF title and it was the first FF title for PS3), but I seriously doubt the way they do things has much to do with the way Yoshida does things. We were promised better communication when Yoshida took over, and it's been generally pretty decent. Seems like the JP side updates are more frequent though. With the frequency of Reinhart's posts, I can truthfully say I'm envious of the JP side and their fairly frequent dev tracker responses - sometimes Yoshida himself responds to these posts.

Would be pretty cool getting (even if it's a translated) response from Yoshida in one of our threads for issues that the English speaking community specifically brings up. Usually when we get translated Yoshida responses it's often because both the JP and English speaking communities are talking about the same subject (more so the JP side), and normally the response was to what someone else posted on the JP side. Completely understandable, considering the language barrier.

Don't get me wrong, our English speaking community reps are great, but sometimes once in awhile it's great to get responses straight from the horse's mouth, in a sense.

If anything I think we can all agree on the fact that XIV's dev team is at least a little more attuned to what the majority of the customers want especially compared to XIII-folk.

Even simple things like character designs from Nomura are not in the game even though the travesty of X-2's games have been a joke for a decade now.

I guess it's more the tone if the interview that sounds like there's no hope because Kitase insists that they haven't and aren't moving away from FF series' core strengths with time travel and even more tacky pink bras in j-pop ballads.
