Sounds like you installed to PS4 from the disc? You can actually download it as a digital edition once you've registered the game to your PS4 library, and then you can play it without touching the disc ever again.

You'd need to delete the disc data and download the whole thing again, but it's possibly worth it. Wait until you've got the Shadowbringers disc registered first, in case it gets funny about adding that to the account otherwise.

The codes you received are good for Early Access only which ends on 07/05/19 I believe. You will receive a registration code with the physical disc. You need to enter this no earlier then 07/02/19 to permanently register the expansion. Physical disc is not needed. Verified this with SE support yesterday

^ basically this, had to go through this with HW, started to worry by the Monday if my physical copy would show up on time XD it did and middy has yet to leave his box due to how notoriously fragile he is.

Also for people who may have a hard time finding any emails from SE sometimes they may go into spam so be careful about mass deleting emails

I was meaning generally. I bought the physical Complete Edition of ARR-Stormblood and because I installed it digitally, I don't have to use the disc to start up the game.

But having done that, I don't know if trying to activate a physical copy of Shadowbringers would mess with that. The PS4 can't have a digital and disc-installed version of a game on it at the same time, so it would potentially want to delete the digital data as soon as you put the disc in.

On the other hand, I think you might get a registration code and can just type that into the PS Store, and never put the Shadowbringers disc in the console at all.

The disc version and the digital version are exactly the same thing. There isn't any difference. I have been playing the Physical Playstation version of this game for the past 6 years, getting all CE versions and have gone from PS3 to PS4 and have never used the disc once. When I first started playing on PS3 I had early Access, and that Early access launcher upgraded to the actual launcher the moment I inputted the game key from the box. Same when I upgraded from PS3 to PS4, the free transfer gave me a launcher to use already. The codes are what dictate what you get, so long as you have the correct items marked on your Mogstation account you are set. Like any MMO, the game disc only houses the game launcher, the exact same launcher that you can download from the game's website.

I know you're able to download and play the digital version by putting the code in from the disc. But that's not the same thing as "no difference".

In your case, the key element is that you never used the disc, and had the digital version installed from the start.

I started on the downloaded trial. I bought the disc and inserted it. It said I had to delete the digital file to install the disc version.

Then I realised that typing in the code to activate the full game had given me access to a digital copy as well. To be able to install it, I had to delete the disc data first.

You can use either option, but you can't have both at once. If Jaywalker is needing to put the disc in the console to run the game, that means he installed it from the disc and the PS4 relies on those files to run the game. He can switch to digital, but would almost certainly have to delete the current program before he can do so.

It's not just this game, it seems to be how the PS4 handles files. A few times when I've been subscribed to the PS Plus service, their 'free game of the month' was a digital copy of something I owned on disc, and I couldn't download it (or possibly even 'buy' it to get it listed in my game library) unless I deleted the disc data first.
