Hey Skizz.
I agree that the Hyperion Novice Network has gone from fantastic in its early days to pretty terrible by today.
FC recruitment and hunts have nothing to do with it. (I'm of the opinion they should be frowned upon, but not going to kick someone over it)
It's the non-stop banter and side-talk. I'm all for being social, but treating the NN like a world chat isn't the best way to go about things imo.
Especially when things get political. Americans can never stop talking about their politics and bringing it into a place that's for help to newbies is only frustrating on their behalf.
Granted, most of the times when someone does speak up with a question, it'll get answered. And because of that people will say that their off-topic chat is okay. I say, take it to a linkshell.
I've seen enough people who simply ask how to leave the NN because they don't want to deal with the chat that some mentors (and novices!) will constantly have. It's annoying as a mentor as well.
Back in HW when NN launched, it was pretty well kept. We had the social rule of keeping things on the topic of the game. It didn't end up as some social club right away. It had class, I used to see topics about the terror of the Novice Network and was always able to perk up and mention Hyperions wasn't anything like that, we were helpful, we weren't just meme-spam like it is today, we were there to help.
It's a far cry from what it was now.
I understand they put very lose restrictions on the chat, but they also gave us the power to curate it with the temp-kicking ability. But doing so almost ensures you'll be removed as well, as others won't agree with how some want it run. It's mutually assured destruction right there. Some form of guidance on how the network should be handled would be a literal godsend. If the GM's are okay with people chatting non-stop about nothing related to FFXIV instead of forming a linkshell for it, so be it. I'll be content with such a response. If they'd prefer it more game-only focused, well we have some changes to make.
