Warrior is a pretty bad ass tank job but in my opinion warrior and marauder are not the same. they may use the same weapon and have an overlap in skills but changing from a marauder to a warrior will drastically change the game-play. Marauder was a class that could be selected during 1.0 and in that respect is still an aspect of the game. I personally liked the idea of classes because they were different in comparison to those of Final Fantasy Eleven, which had a different system but many of the same titles. I was curious what sort of path they were meant for.
In the context of an old-school MMORPG your in for a large amount of grind time and part of the problem they experienced with FF11 was that the gap between endgame expansions in being a new player was very difficult to close, not to mention the time investment. So i think something came about in which a duty finder was implemented in various MMO such as world of warcraft. To me FFxiv had appeared as an effort to make that gap of little consequence in a pinch of time through various in-game facilities.
This is the sort of thing you are going to have to face if you should choose not to do your Job quest, a good bit of disappointment and social pressure, but it is possible to go without it. your new skills will stop at lvl 50, leaving you thirsty for foe. I originally had chose Gladiator as a class, and when the sixth astral era ended and a realm reborn had begun i though i might become the paladin, I held out and eventually decided to leave it as is because it was a sort of original remnant.
Although with the expansion of Shadowbringers they are supposed to shift the focus towards the roles themselves, which to me seems a way to dispel the significant of any one specific job in relation to the main ideas of the story ark.
It just depends on what you want to do, If you want to spend your time High end dungeons as a tank, raiding with a savage static out in front and prowling for daunting hunt marks, and grinding out relic weapons and armor then yes, you probably want to follow your Job quests. I personally believe that players should make at least one of their gear sets strictly a Class function in order to experience the game from this perspective, because there is a sense of adventure and trill to being at a disadvantage. You will learn more about the game itself in pursuing alternate means of progress.
