Aesthetician and Retainers?

That's the problem.

When you first use a retainer Fantasia, there's (as I remember it) an active help pop-up saying something to the effect that you can send your retainers to the aesthetician any time you like, but for more drastic changes you need a Fantasia.

Either it's a mistranslation, poorly-considered flavour text, or we are missing the "any time without resorting to a Fantasia" option that it seems to indicate is available to us.

You would need to use a retainer fantasia every time you want to customize them. Then go to the Retainer Vocate in most any marketplace to change the name and appearance of your retainer. I just ran through that process last night.
