If there was any harm done to the community prior to 2.0 launch, it was the failure of 1.0 as a whole. Gender locks had little to do with it. I'm guessing it was one of many grievances though.
The genderlocks are currently harming the community as a hole currently. There's many people who are aggressive towards others on both sides, and as someone who has played since 1.0, I think that from 2.0 onwards the community was never as toxic as now
Is there a debate going on currently? Absolutely. But...I don't think it's quite as heated as you believe, nor as widespread. There is no overall harm being done to the community just because a race/gender variant wasn't added. I'm sure a lot of people want male Viera, but I don't think people are at each others throats all over the place because of their absence or peoples' desire to have them. This thread and the people posting within are, while a decent gauge of community demand, but a drop in an ocean. I haven't seen any heated discussions regarding Viera in game anywhere at any time. The only place I have seen a discussion being had is here on the forums.
Exactly.
Not once, in my time playing 1.0 did I encounter anyone asking for missing genders of races to be added. Those were the least of concerns of players with how terrible 1.0 was at the time.
One of the main reasons I joined this game back in 2014 was because they upgraded to WoW standards where genderlocks have no place in existing.
Read the live letter, it ain't happening, end of story, unless you are going to fly to japan and program it in yourself.
I don't see why they can't add an option for male Viera, there are some male Viera that exist. But ultimately, not a big deal, none of the jobs are race/gender locked. You can be a dancer with any race AFAIK, and there's no shame in guys playing as a female Viera. It's a Roleplaying game, you can be whatever sex/race you want.
Actually, if you read the letter, Yoshi says that he isn't saying it'll never happen, but that he can't promise it will happen either. He mentions that if they can find a way to get past "obstacles" (he's vague about what these obstacles are) that they wouldn't mind adding them at some point. Now, if you're choosing to interpret that as "never", that's your choice to do so, but then you'd be misinterpreting his words.
"As you play through Shadowbringers, you’ll learn that both male Viera and female Hrothgar exist. While you won’t meet any in person, if we developers can find a way to address the various problems which are preventing us from implementing them, then perhaps someday you’ll be able to see them for yourself. I want to be clear that this does not mean it will eventually happen, and that I cannot make any promises at this time. I hope you will understand and bear with us."
Now, I'll be the first to say, that certainly is NOT a guarantee in any way, shape, or form. However, it's also not a firm no, which means the possibility is still there. So while I won't be getting my hopes up, I certainly won't give up in asking for the missing genders. And as I said earlier in the thread, if you have a problem with that, I'm not sure why you're even on this thread to begin with.
