Say what you will, but if TOR did one thing it made story a big part of the game. In comparison, FFXIV's story is nearly non-existant beyond the sparse main story quests.
I think some of the story surrounding the 7th umbral era and grand company quests is decently done. Anyways it is better than anything I ever heard in TOR.

TOR made voice acting a part of the game, and largely pointless "dialogue choices" a part of the game. If they really wanted to make story a part of the game then they should have hired writers capable of at least producing KOTOR level storylines.

What level did you play to? Did you do any of the flashpoints where your choices can influence what part of the dungeon you go to or what bosses spawn etc? Your choices actually influence the appearance of your character. The way NPC's interact with you in the future is determined by your choices. The way your companion interacts with you is based on your choices. I'm just curious why you seem to think that the dialog choices are pointless. If you only played to level 10 or 20 then I can understand why you would say that.

Yeah it is obvious from his comments that he doesn't have a clue what he is talking about. One less person in the queue for SW for me to have to wait on!

SWTOR is a decent enough game but it suffers from as many of its own flaws as FFXIV does with its own. Most of the issues I have is graphical mostly thanks to the engine they decided to use to make it, leading to alot of bugs that deperately need fixed. I don't have much hope in them doing so however as one of the biggest issues I had during beta was crudely masked over with a simple loading screen.

There's still a decent amount to do in the game however, unless you like PvP, then it's a pure quest grinder MMO, lengthened by the dialogue in which the quality varies from good to cheesy. The class quests are ofcourse the best but the stories are your typical cliche'd plotlines you'll find everywhere else. And the combat is ok for the most part, especially since you are fighting multiple enemies at the same time. However, only a few select abilities are ever needed and after applying a few crowd control measures, it turns into a basic button-masher.

It doesn't matter though, I'm enjoying SWTOR for what its worth, as much as I still plan to keep on enjoy playing FFXIV. I don't have to down-right support one in favour of the other, nor do I get why others feel that they have to. As gamers we're free to play whatever we like, and be able to enjoy various games based on their own merits, as we would with movies.

Well you can go over to IMDB to see that not everyone who enjoyed The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo also enjoyed the Twilight films. Also the film industry is far more mature than the the video game market, and the MMO market in particular. Trends in Hollywood may turn out some real crap in their efforts to sell tickets to the masses, but there are so many capable studios around the world, and established directors capable of exerting creative control over projects (unlike in the video game industry) that a film buff can always find something coming out they enjoy.

For MMO's unfortunately there are very few MMO's catering to anything but the "largest audience". As you said TOR is just another quest grinder, and in my opinion one that is pathetically masked with voice overs of horrible writing. I don't understand why this thread hasn't been locked, but since it hasn't I'd just like to point out that not everyone in FFXIV would like the dev team to use TOR as any kind of guideline for what a quality MMO should look like.

The only reason I might seem to support FFXIV's artistic direction over anything else, is simply because nothing else on the market appeals to me at all. Shallow quest grinders are the only other option available right now in the current generation of MMO's. If they were making a sequel to Vanguard, or anybody but SOE was making EQ next I'd likely be excited for those games as well. Unfortunately there is really nothing out or on the horizon.

The combat in games like TOR is incredibely simplistic (as you accurately described a button masher), the story lines are lame, the flashpoints/operations/warzones (or their equivalent in other similar MMO's) are all shallow and mind numbingly boring after you do them a few times. It isn't an MMO I'd want to play long term, and I think it would be unfortunate for anything in XIV's plans to change because of any short term success it is seeing at the moment (just like I wouldn't have wanted to see "Rifts", or X new MMO feature introduced simply because those games sold a lot of boxes/had a strong initial population).

As long as I care, SW:TOR, told from my friends who have experienced it, is a Single-player WoW with a cool story.
If you like that play it, I don't even =)

    And see ya later op!

    I'm looking forward to EQNext.
From what I've read so far; it should be an actual MMORPG and not a hub MO with an MMO interface.
It could be another piece of crap MMORPG, but it's not the first time I've been let down.
