I think a lot of the rude, condescending responses here speak clearly of the problem. SE/GMs need to have better requirements for not only being a mentor but maintaining mentor status, giving people rude, sarcasm-filled, condescending “advice” should be grounds for long term if not permanent removal from the mentor program.

I would absolutely LOVE it if SE put actual living, trained people in the NN to 'police' it. Not necessarily to tell people advice is wrong, or to correct inaccuracies, but more to stop the downright disgusting attitude most people with Crowns' Syndrome have.

Hell, bang another £1 to my sub and I'll happily help fund it myself.

Yes, you should be competent at your job, but let's be real here. NONE of you were competent at the start lol. I can tank literally everything, cleared ultimate many times, and still, I'll screw up from time to time. If you happen to get me during one of my bad runs, you'll probably black list me or something lol. "What a bad tank!" xD. Overtime, most bad players become good players, most good players become great players.

Thing is, a MENTOR should be able to BUILD UP someone who has potential, not talk them down. Think of how many people give up because they feel like they can't get an advice or help, feel alienated, and just leave the game. When they could have been developed into a good player. That's why I ALWAYS drop a balance discord link instead of suggesting novice network, or hell, I'll send them a friend request, because of how terrible the mentor system is.

That's insane: that the mentor system is the LAST place you'd want a genuine person to go for help, for fear they will be laughed at, have toxicity hurled at them, and other things.

    Agreed on that.

I also support changing the crown to a watering can.

Or, and hear me out on that one, scrap the system entirely. This thread showed none of you actually have the knowlege to mentor other players. Coddle them, you'd all be A+. So scrap it and let's go back to the good old ways of trial and error which proved true in many other MMOs and the 2.X era.

I'll say what I feel they should have been:

    * Respectable resources for information about the area they claim to be a mentor in. (Or, you know, able to point someone who has no idea where the credible resources are for this game to credible resources, like actually the bare minimum amount of work required)
    * The crown itself should mean "I have done this content previously and know about it, and am willing to offer help should it be needed", so... turn it off when those prerequisites aren't met.

    What they are:

    * A disguised means to fill queues with laughably low standards to become one, that can easily misinform and misguide new players who think it might mean something.
    * Something a lot of players turn on because they like that the crown makes them stand out, and not because of the actual intention of being a "mentor."
*And a means for players who have 0 clue what they are talking about to have an accidental appearance of credibility since the game marks them as a "Mentor" to new players who otherwise don't know it's basically a meaningless icon.

And what I think should be done about it:

    * Literally removing it from the game.

Technically, I'm a mentor. I filled out those requirements years ago, but after spending a lot of time directly experiencing people in the game, the Novice Network and so on... realized it's basically pointless and the icon itself is just a meme and likely does more harm for the game than good (besides... I guess, filling out queues).

I agree on that, but it should also be mentioned that it's not a mentor's job to hold the hand of someone that used a jump potion and has no idea about basic stuff through end game content. Someone like that should be directed or taught through correct means (e.g. early game dungeons, guildhests etc). Not in an in endgame content where the other members of the party expect that you at least know how to use your job.

Oh God this reminds me of back when being in NN wasn't optional. I made an alt so I was in the chat. Sprouts who were asking about classes were met with very complicated answers about max lvl rotations and stat weights. The answers were obviously crafted to show off their superiority, not to help a sprout. When I gave more basic answers a sprout would understand some of the mentors started mocking me because being a sprout myself I supposedly wouldn't know what I was talking about. Explaining that I was on an alt was met with "lol sure". The rest of the chat was just the mentors talking about raiding and trying to one-up each other.

    Helpful indeed.

Wow, y’all have some horrible NN channels. Fortunately the Jenova one is fairly decent. There are moments of course, but for the most part a large amount of the mentors participating are helpful when a question is asked. Granted a lot chit chat happens too, but questions tend to be answered.

Other people who can benefit from guides should be reading them so it's better to focus on helping those who can't by keeping it brief and simple.
That's fine. Usually if a particular mechanic is confusing the heck outta me I'll speak up and ask for help with that bit. I'll try to figure it out on my own first, but if I can't, then I'll swallow my pride and ask. Usually a lot of the mechanics click with me, but there's that occasional curveball that just confuses me to no end. That's when zeroing in on that would be good. Fun fact, I actually managed to get Seriyu Ex down at last last night. Joined a kill group and one shot it (and if I remember rightly, I didn't die once). Which shows that we CAN do it, we just need a different way to get there, that's all, instead of the usual "Read the guide".

As I'm sure you are well aware, it takes more than one person to be able to kick a player from a duty, so in all those instances there were at least two people agreeing they'd be better off without you tanking.
