I guess my contention is that your friend has paid for this content. Stating that the quests and story is 'wasting their time and in the way of playing the content they paid for' is disingenuous. Thats content you paid for. You may think its a slog (and there is a lot of it) but its still part of the game. Ask yourself what you and your friend are aiming to do? If they want to play the story and MSQ, then thats part of it and it seems counter productive to be upset about it. It's like if youre reading a book and decide to skip some chapters cause "Oh its boring." At that point, why not skip to the end and just know how it finishes, and if youre going to do that, why bother reading the book at all.

If the MSQ isnt a draw and end game dungeons is, then just speed through it or use a skip potion. I get the MSQ is long, but seriously, I think people are making it out to be worse than it is. Smash that mouse click or gamepad and just zip through all the texts, skip every cutscene, and its really not as long as people give it, especially if you can have someone unsync and run you through dungeons.

TLDR: Either skip cut-scenes and dialogue if the jump potion is to expensive, or actually play the content they paid for and just enjoy it for what it is. Which ever is more important, just do that and run with it.

To be honest i don't know why exactly people defend the terrible MSQ experience.

All the content in the game is locked behind MSQ. It takes hundreds of hours to complete it. And its just repetitive go here, talk to his person, go back.

When i had to do the MSQ grind i hated it, and with a new expansion coming out i can understand why new players feel this rush to get through it.

They want to get to the new stuff and play with friends/experience the new expansion and jobs.

People like to give WoW a lot of crap, but at least its new player experience is much better than FF14's new player experience.

It IS whining. Whining that he cannot have his cake and eat it, too.

Special snowflake syndrome of how terrible it is that someone has to actually play the game. Literally every game does this.

Might as well sell every game as the final mission only. Like whining about Lord of the rings, and wanting only to skip to the battle of the black gate.

    That is childish.

    It's a matter of opinion.

For example I found WoW boring, you begin, get no story to do, then do some random quest. Not my thing. While it was for some friends. Dungeoning right away for their way.

On the other ends. Some of those friends couldn't care less about the story so went back to WoW or other game. While some others stayed because they liked a MMO that have a story to do. And the fact that the content is tied to MSQ making it relevent.

Edit : yes I didn't played WoW much, because as I said earlier found it boring, it's not my type of game.

The new player experience is fine. Yall just want to skip everything and have no patience. In old games, the whole point was to go thru the whole thing.

I can kind of tell you didn't play much WoW. There is a main story, but each zone in the game has it own condensed little story. But it does add up to the main story.

What i think FF14 needs is a wow cataclysm revamp. If you don't know what i mean but that, i mean revamping all the old zones/stories.

When WoW cataclysm was released all the old zones were updated, and their stories were changed to reflect the new world/story.

You do have the option to skip the story if you wish to buy it, as I recall it is even on sale right now. As for getting the person in question to the level to do the content you can just skip ARR and do PoTD or get a tank/healer to spam dungeons with to get to the levels required. Then in ShB you can go

I would agree the ARR patch content needs a trim but as I have leveled several alts before I don't even know what you would trim really aside from the fetch quests and most of 2.1 A lot of the "pointless fetch quests" actually do develop things for later story arcs such as characters and locations. The instances also teach you mechanics that show up in a boss I swear was designed to go "Did you do the ARR patch content" in SB.

Is there only one right way to do a given thing? What is wrong with skipping chapters in a book? Why would skipping chapters make the book not worth reading? What do books have to do with an interactive medium like FF14? People have different reasons for playing a game and they're all valid. Unless people skipping the story hurts other players in some way, I don't see why people should care about it.

This is my own rant, but my only gripe with story skip is that it's implemented as a pay for option. Why do you have to pay to get around a less enjoyable portion of the game that you already payed for? It just seems bizarre to me. It may also contribute to bad game design overall. If a developer can just put out mediocre content and then ask for money when people want to avoid that content, is that good? Of course people are free to answer that question themselves, but I'll never pay for any kind of skip despite finding it very handy in a game like FF14.

If that's the case why ask for any QoL at all? I don't think requesting a way around the story for new players in unreasonable at all. It might help them maintain interest in the game which is ultimately good for everyone playing.

So why rush to "catch up"? Why not play the game and enjoy it as it is? Eventually they will reach the latest parts of the game anyway. New content is not more "relevant" than old content, just newer.

The idea that you need to reach the newest parts of the game as soon as they are released - that is the problem.
